Sister Nancy Brown; "Buying Sex is a Crime! Stop the Demand."

Working tirelessly for the most vulnerable in BC - homeless youth and young people at risk for human trafficking and sexual exploitation, Sister Nancy Brown is a 2012 Order of British Columbia recipient. She has worked directly with youth at Vancouver's Covenant House for close to 20 years.

Oktoberfest Saturday October 28th - BRING YOUR FRIENDS!

RCoV's annual fundraiser for our youth programs, Oktoberfest, is fast approaching. Our goal this year is to raise a minimum of $15,000 to ensure we have enough funds to support our youth programs for the year. We need YOUR help to achieve this. Here's what we need:
  1. Donations, donations, donations for the auction. They are starting to come in but we needs a lot more, and we need these as soon as possible. The more the merrier and the bigger the better. Contact your friends and colleagues to see if they too can help. Click HERE to fill out a donation form.
  2. Purchase tickets to attend. Consider purchasing a table for a family party or work social. If you haven't already, please register now by clicking HERE.

President Phil Webber chaired the meeting and gave the invocation.
Kayo Otake accompanied on the piano for the singing of O Canada.

Chair's (Phil Webber's) announcements:
  • Oktoberfest - thanks to those who have already contacted us with their donations. However the list is still slim; we really needs lots more quality donations asap as this is how we generate the funds needed to run our youth programs. Tickets are available now. An email will be sent out in due course to facilitate registration.
  • Next week, Sept. 26th: A delegation of 6 Rotarians from Taipei Yungfu and 1 from Taipei Fuyou with a spouse of 1 makes 8 plus 8-10 Rotarian's from Vancouver Centennial will be joining us as guests. A total of 16-18 guests!
  • 2018 Hoop-a-thon planning, benefitting youth and youth-at-risk, and a recap of the 2017 Hoop-a-thon, presented by Gary Chomyn on Aug. 22nd) will be held next Tuesday at the Strathcona Community Centre at 5:00 p.m. If you're interested, please attend.
  • Lewis Rosenbloom established a scholorship fund in the name of "Rotary Club of Vancouver - Lewis Rosenbloom Memorial" with the VCC Foundation many years ago. Over the recent past it has funded an annual scholorship of $500 at VCC (Vancouver Community College). The latest recipient, Daniel Li, has written a thank you, click HERE to read.
  • Nominations for District Governor for 2020/21 are now being sought. They must be submitted by Friday, October 27, 2017 and should be forwarded to the Chair, Nominations must be accompanied by a Club resolution authorizing the nomination, a current photograph of the candidate, and a resume setting out both Rotary service and personal background.
  • Please submit your volunteer hours to Carolyn for August (& July if you haven't already done so).
  • Rotary Curling Weekend at Squamish, November 3rd (dinner only), with curling and awards banquet on November 4th & 5th. Please register with Wendy Dauphinee, Myron Kusych or Mel Endelman ( No curling experience required.
  • Grand Fondo Anyone: Screening of Chasing Legends on Saturday September 23rd. Free tickets on a first come, first served basis.
  • Breathe: a feature film regarding polio. Brian Street & Franco Gallo are organizing a Rotary evening for a showing of the movie.

Special announcement & presentations:
  • Paul McCrae let us know that unfortunately the Cariboo Weekend has been cancelled due to extreme damage done to one of the cabins. A small assessment/work team will visit the Wunday Ranch to assess what is required to pull off the 44th Cariboo Weekend next year.
  • Parisa Adrangi provided us with her new member talk. Great getting to know Parisa better. Wonderful job and again, welcome to the RCoV fold.
  • Wolfgang Degemann with the help of Elvis (Joe Lopushinsky) & his manager officially launched the 2017 Oktoberfest promotions. If this presentation was anything to judge by, we can look forward to a great fun-filled evening.
Program: Milton Kang introduced Donna McLennan, Dr. Lawrence Mayer & Dana (blood cancer survivor) of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, BC & Yukon Region. As a team, they provided us with a great presentation about the work they do and how impactful they are for those touched both directly and indirectly by blood cancers.
