RCoV Curling Classic - 40th year running!
All members are invited to attend and participate in the Squamish Curling bonspiel over the weekend of November 3, 4 and 5.  No experience is necessary and instruction and equipment will be provided. 
 
The Rotary Club of Vancouver fall Curling Classic has been going on for 40 years and is a pile of fun for curlers and non-curlers alike.

Remembrance Day - Fundraiser for Veterans
More volunteers to sell Remembrance Day poppies outside of Nordstroms and the Pacific Center are required for Thursday, Friday and Saturday,  November 2, 3 and 4.

A number of the legion members who are the veterans who fought to defend our way of life and freedoms are aging and unable to stand with the tins and poppies to place on donor’s lapels.  The average age of the legion branch we would be volunteering for is over 80.

At the regular club meetings on October 24 the club will be asked to approve the nomination of a member as District Governor Nominee and at the meetings on October 31 and November 7 to ratify and confirm the resolutions passed October 24.

Our AGM is coming up on December 12th and we will be electing the following positions:

3 directors
Sergeant at Arms
 
As the nominations committee, we will be reaching out to members to fill these roles but we are most interested in hearing directly from members if they have an interest in letting their name stand for any of these offices.

Chair's (Phil Webber's) announcements:
  • CKNW Orphans' Fund Pledge Day 2017, Nov 29th. Looking for teams of 6 volunteers working in 2-hour blocks throughout the day. They need to know who will be volunteering by Oct 31st. Please contact Rene or Gerry.
  • SAVE THE DATE: Members are invited to the official opening of The exchange Building on Nov 10th, 10:00 a.m. Vancouver's mayor will be attending. The Exchange Building is the most sustainable downtown project in North America that includes a heritage conversion. This project was conceived and has been carried out by Franz Gehriger, Swissreal Investments Ltd. with the assistance of Iredale Architecture.

Special announcements; members' moments:
  • Madhu Toshniwal, provided us with a lovely Diwali celebration, with an explanation of what the special occasion means, special lights on every table, and chocolate sweet Purdys treats for all to share. Thank you Madhu.
  • Shelterbox Heros recognition and celebration dinner, Nov 4th. Both RCoV and Vancouver Young Professionals Rotoract Club are Shelterbox Heros and will be receiving recognition at the dinner. The awards will be presented by our District Governor, Don Evans. John Charbonneau and Kevin Evans from Voice from the Sky will be the MCs. CLICK HERE for tickets.
  • Verona Edelstein, Offering to the highest bidder or bidders, her home on Paradise Island. All funds will go to support RCoV's youth programs. More information will be sent via email. If you have questions, please contact Verona.
 
Program: Franco Gallo introduced Dr. Lorrie Miller and Dr. Samson Nashon from UBC. They provided us with information about the Dadaab Refugee Centre in Kenya and the wonderful teacher program they are running there. Teaching over 80 refugees to be teachers, thereby improving the lives of thousands. RCoV has donated $5,000 towards this project; they expressed their gratitude. The work continues...
 
Meeting adjourned with a toast to the strength of education and the bonds it can release.
