Summer Barbeque and Official Youth Gala Launch

Come and enjoy some relaxed summer barbeque fare - hot off the grill beef, salmon, chicken & veggie burgers. Build them the way you like them. Then top it all off with some scrumptious house-made pies. Yumm!!! 

The patio will be open and there will be lots of time to mingle and network with fellow Rotarians before the meeting begins.

 

               
 
We've all been told about the new fundraising incentive to raise funds for our Youth programs and to support the Ray-Cam Community Centre's Youth Mentorship Program. This week will be the official launch for this important event. See where the committee stands, what work has been done, and where more help is needed to make this, the first annual Red Carpet Ball as successful as possible.

ANNUAL ROTARY INTERNATIONAL (RI) THEMES

(excerpt from The ABCs of Rotary)
 
The images above show the RI themes for the past 4 years with the latest on the right, Be The Inspiration. It was in 1949-50 when RI President Percy C. Hodgson established four objectives for his team and launched the Rotary tradition of an annual theme. Since then, the annual RI themes have varied in length and message but all have inspired Rotarians to greater action. Some of the past themes:
  • Participate! in 1961-62 was the shortest theme; repeated again in 1968-69
  • Meeting Rotary's Challenge in the Space Age in 1963-64
  • Take Time to Serve, 1980-81
  • Mankind is One -- Build Bridges of Friendship throughout the World, 1982-83
  • Rotarians -- United in Service -- Dedicated to Peace, 1987-88

Rotary Leadership Institute
The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a series of fast-paced, interactive, one-day courses offered to refine a Rotarian's leadership skills and increase their base of knowledge in Rotary.  Courses are fun, topical, interactive, and geared toward busy business, professional and community leaders who want to be more effective leaders in their vocation and Rotary club and more knowledgeable Rotarians.
 
All Rotarians, particularly newer members, are encouraged to participate. Note: RC of Vancouver members will be reimbursed in full for their paid registration fee.

President's announcements:
  • Summer is in full swing, many of our members are enjoying family vacations, and our Membership Committee is still working hard. We have another two potential members, Robert Costigan & Brady Carpenter, whose applications are in the notice phase. Barring any problems we look forward to them joining our Club in a couple of weeks.

  • Doug Kellough was happy to present our star golfer, David Motion with a wonderful keepsake in memory of his hole-in-one on June 14th at the Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club. Quite a feat David; you are now among the elite boasters!

Fred West introduced Dr. Jonathon Berkowitz who entertained us all with his presentation: Word and Numbers: Closer than you Think
 
Dr. Berkowitz's fascination with words and patterns started when he was a wee lad. He enjoyed dinosaurs, not unusual, but what was most interesting to him were their names. Long, complicated names and he memorized them all -- backwards. Now that is somewhat unusual.
 
Something to ponder:
  • Rotary (meaning something that turns, around an axis, with no end in sight) meets at the Terminal City Club (meaning the end of something)
  • If you change the first letter of Rotary; Votary (a person who strongly supports a particular cause or person); Notary (an official who has the legal authority to make an oath official)
Could this be a latin word puzzle? The following message was carved into a wooden pillar. Can you interpret it? 
  TOTI
  EMUL
  ESTO

Answer: TO TIE MULES TO; it's all in how you look at it

There are many ways to look at words. Remember the movie: DUMB and DUMBER. How about: NUMB and NUMBER. When you see the word, NUMBER, do you only think of its mathematical meaning?

What about ONE. It doesn’t rhyme with: BONE CONE HONE LONE PONE TONE ZONE. It does rhyme with: DONE NONE. And none of these rhyme with: GONE.

How about some new math? Look at 11 + 2 – 1 = ? Did you get 12? A more creative way: 11 plus 2 is 112, then 112 minus 1 is 12. Creatively, in Roman numerals: XI plus II is XIII, then XIII minus I is XII. Exceptionally clever solution: ELEVEN + TWO = ELEVENTWO; remove O,N,E, to get ELVETW; move the last two letters to the front to get TWELVE. So ELEVEN + TWO – ONE = TWELVE in words and letters and numbers.

Some postcripts:

  1. There are two such examples in Spanish. Find them, for homework.
  2. Write 1 + 12 = 2 + 11 in Roman numerals, reverse order from right to left, add one space: I + XII = II + XI → IX + II = IIX + I →  IX + II = I + IX + I
    Translation: 1 + 12 = 2 + 11 becomes 9 + 2 = 1 + 9 + 1. Wow!

Some short puzzles:

  1. What is half of 8, aside from the obvious answer of 4?
    Answer: 0 (top or bottom half), 3 (right half)
  2. The numbers 7 and 11 are both odd. How can you make them both even?
    Answer: Drop the first letter of SEVEN and the first two letters of ELEVEN.
  3. A classic: Continue the following pattern: O T T F F S S …
    Answer: E. The first letters of One, Two, Three, Four,…
  4. What is the only number in English with its letters in alphabetical order?
    Answer: FORTY
  5. What does the following sequence represent?
    1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 3 1 1 1
    Answer: Number of syllables in each letter in the alphabet.
Lucky and unlucky numbers:
  1. Lucky number: one spelled with seven letters. There are three.
    FIFTEEN, SIXTEEN, SEVENTY
  2. Unlucky number name: one spelled with thirteen letters. There are many.
    Smallest is ONE HUNDRED ONE (Largest is NINE DECILLION)
  3. Lucky unlucky equation: add the three lucky numbers…
    15 + 16 + 70 = 101, the smallest unlucky number

Truthful numbers:

  1. ONE – counts itself as a single word, single syllable, single digit, single consonant
  2. FOUR – correctly counts the number of letters in its name. It’s the only such number in English.
  3. TWENTY NINE – requires 29 straight lines to make its letters!
  4. TWELVE – truthful in Scrabble since it equals the sum of the point values of the letters: 1 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 4 + 1 = 12.
  5. 10,213,223 – is self-enumerating.
    There is 1 zero, 2 ones, 3 twos and 2 threes. This is my favourite.
“ENGLIMATRIA” – numerical value of words. Dr. Berkowitz does gematria in English, hence the term Englimatria, using the Letter/Number substitution: A=1, B=2, C=3,..., Z=26. Here are some special (perfect) ones:
  1. F R E D  W E S T = 6 + 18 + 5 + 4 + 23 + 5 + 19 + 20 = 100
  2. P H I L  W E B B E R = 16 + 8 + 9 + 12 + 23 + 5 + 2 + 2 + 5 + 18 = 100 
  3. J.  T R U D E A U = 10 + 20 + 18 + 21 + 4 + 5 + 1 + 21 = 100
    And
  4. R O T A R Y = 18 + 15 + 20 + 1 + 18 + 25 = 97
    Add the C. as an abbreviation for Club
    R O T A R Y   C. = 100!
More curiosities:
  1. Write the denominations in a deck of cards, from two through ace: TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT, NINE, TEN, JACK, QUEEN, KING, ACE.
    It takes 52 letters.
  2. The sum of pips or dots on one die: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 21
    The alphabetic value of the word DICE: 4 + 9 + 3 + 5 = 21
  3. Read this as a limerick: ((12 + 144 + 20 + 3 √4) ÷ 7) + (5 x 11) = 92 + 0
    A dozen, a gross, and a score,
    Plus three times the square root of four,
    Divided by seven,
    Plus five times eleven,
    Is nine squared and not a bit more.
Conclusion:
  • What is the alphabetically first number, that is, the first you would encounter in the dictionary if all number names were included? EIGHT is the usual answer. But this overlooks the name of the numeral “0”. It has many names.One of them is AUGHT, the first number name. Another is ZERO, the last number name.

    This is a sensational discovery – from ashes to ashes, from dust to dust, from nothing to nothing. And the end is a good place to end.
