I want to than all of you RCK members who attended the installation dinner. From the feedback I received it seemed as though everyone had a good time. There are several people that I need to thank for their help in making the night a success. Thanks Natasha with putting together the program. Thanks Marietta for getting the leis and helping with the planning and set-up. Thanks to my wife Linda for the planning, shopping and decorating. Thanks to DG Del Green for performing the installations. Thanks Dick, Dan and Bili for your participation. Thanks to Miles Nakatani of MN printing for providing the logo for the name tags. Thanks to Don Arakaki for the sound system. It appears as though all of the schools participating in the Dictionary Project have been covered. I want to thank everyone for their prompt and generous support of this important project. If you haven't paid yet please give Arlene your check. I never did get a response regarding the school supplies drive at Longs. It was scheduled for this weekend. However, Kapolei Sunset is seeking our help with their book shipments on Sunday. If you can help please set aside some time in the morning. It will be at the Hawaii Self Storage behind Costco. Details will be provided at the meeting. I will also be contacting Longs to see about scheduling the school supply drive on the last weekend of July. We can also discuss that at the meeting. This will be the final weekend without the usual breakfast. Natasha has volunteered to provide a continental breakfast. The school will need our meeting room at 8:30 so I will try to keep up the pace so we can be out on time. July Meeting Schedule July 16: Regular weekly meeting. Speaker will be Senator Mike Gabbard. July 23: Regular weekly meeting and I believe the cafeteria will be open. Our speaker will be Dan Ashcroft of the Kamahao Canoe Club. July 30: Regular weekly meeting. Our guest speaker will be Ford Fuchigami, Director of the Dept. of Transportation. Mahalo to all for your support. If there is any topic you like to learn about, or a speaker you would like to hear, please don't hesitate to let me know, and we will work to get it on the schedule. This is my first post as the 2014-15 President, and I first want to thank all of you for serving as Rotarians and as members of our club. All that we do in the coming year in serving our community, and all that we do to have fun, will depend upon us as a team, supporting one another. Many thanks to Arlene Estrella and to our 2013-14 board for their good work. Our club is strong and our treasury is in good shape going into the new Rotary year. Mahalo to all who joined us for the induction dinner, held at the Pacific Aviation Museum on June 24. Going forward into the new Rotary year, we will work to have interesting and exciting meetings, and I solicit your thoughts on what you would like to see. I am working to line up relevant speakers for many of our meetings, and we will send an e-mail blast each week to keep you up to date. I look forward to your meaningful contribution to our club's success. Here are a few highlights for the upcoming month: July 10: The school cafeteria is closed. We propose a pau hana, very informal, and will soon announce the time and location. This is just a time for fellowship and a chance to invite a friend or co-worker to meet our membership. July 16: We will hold our annual board meeting with our new District Governor, Laura Steelquist. She will conduct a meeting with each of the Hawaii Rotary Clubs, so has a really busy schedule, but she is a really supportive leader and fun to be with. Tentatively, the meeting will begin at 6 PM and will be at the Seven Palms restaurant at the Navy/Marine Golf Course on Valkenburgh Street near the airport. You do not need a military ID to attend and to eat at the facility. We will send a final notice to all board members once we have confirmed the restaurant, but for all of our board, please mark the date and make every effort to attend. July 17: This will be our regular Thursday meeting and is our annual club meeting with District Governor Laura Steelquist. She is an excellent speaker, the meeting will be fun, and if you can only make one meeting in the next few weeks, please attend this one. July 24: The school cafeteria is closed again this week, and we are working to set up a breakfast and tour of the Barber’s Point Coast Guard Air Station. They always have an interesting tour and a good and inexpensive breakfast. More details to follow when firm. Speaker Update: In the near term, we expect to host Gov. Abercrombie as a speaker. Our plan is to invite key political figures who can talk with us about their past contribution to our community. As background, we are as an organization non-partisan and apolitical. Therefore, speakers have been asked not to campaign but to outline their service to our community. We encourage you to attend and to bring a friend, but do ask that we treat all speakers with courtesy and avoid political debate in our question and answer period. Our goal is to keep us informed as community members and leaders. Mahalo to all for your participation and support. We are off to a good start in the new Rotary year. About us - Membership Plan	Posted by Arlene Estrella	on May 25, 2013	Residents and employees in Kapolei and the Ewa plain area are somewhat more transient in nature than in other sections of Oahu. So, the club has an attrition rate that is reasonably predictable each year. By adding 10-12 new members in 2011, the club can be reasonably sure that a net of six members will result, more than meeting our 10 percent goal. The two most common methods of recruitment are referral by a current member, who usually also acts as sponsor, and drop-in, often because of local publicity. The club believes that these methods are reliable into the future and better than any social event designed to attract candidates. The quality of our speakers, meetings, esprit de corps and projects are what attract and retain membership. The club has around 40 members, down from a high mark of more than 70. In the club's estimation, the membership wants to be only as large as it needs to be in order to complete successfully the programs for service we take on. While the west Oahu community is more transient, club members believe that there are steps that they can take to ensure that members feel connected to the club and, thus, likely to remain members as long as they live and/or work in the area. These include: High quality service programs that people feel good about doing and are effective. Members' moments, where members share with the entire club information and insights about themselves, i.e. education, occupation, favorite activities, little known facts. Opportunities for fellowship with other members in interest subgroups or focused activities like a play or a baseball game attended together. Members sitting at different tables each week to get to know more than their usual circle. Ultimate strategies Build our local community by establishing strategic alliances with schools, businesses and the Chamber of Commerce to advance the well-being of the Kapolei region. Give good reason to members for their gifts of time, the most precious gift Achieve the 20% minimum threshold where every member participates in 20% to 50% of the activities. CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS			September 8th: Board of Water Supply 25 year Draft Water Master Plan. We will have a representative from the Board of Water Supply to explain their plan. September 15th: No meeting due to WIELD event on Saturday 17th from 8:30a-4:30p. Come out and support our Interact and Earlyact students. September 22nd: Pauline Sato of the Malama Learning Center at Kapolei High School brings art, science, conservation and culture together to promote sustainable living throughout Hawaii. September 29th: Lorraine Gershun, Director of College Directions - Hawaii will answer your questions about being ready for college and if not, where to start. October 6th This week is our Funtober Breakfast Meeting: Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. room will be decorated to fit the mood. Give aways, and raffles to some lucky ones. A scavenger hunt and a from the neck up costume contest will be observed. There will be a table of masks, hats, and accessories if you come unprepared. Prizes for winners. Come one come all. Board meeting to follow. Oct 13th: This week our vocational guest speaker will be Gerry Clarin a teacher from Campbell High School. Giving us a look at the life of a school teacher. Oct 20th: Queen's Medical Center West Oahu: Will be our vocational tour/visit, directions and instructions will be on your table this week. Time will be from 7:30 - 9:30 am. You can leave earlier if you wish. Oct 27th: This week guest speaker will be Mike Hulser, the Biz MD, who will speak about the Easter Seals Hawaii program. Also, this coming Thursday we will be at the Makeke Kapolei! Come visit us and pick up tickets for our upcoming Bingo for Scholarships fundraiser.
