Pacific Gateway Center’s steadfast purpose is to serve the disadvantaged, uprooted and the displaced.  Since our founding in 1973, our story has been defined by the meaningful and effective ways we empower Hawaii’s low-income residents, immigrants, refugees, and other vulnerable populations in rebuilding their lives with hope, respect, dignity.  One success story is the Hale ʻAina Award-Winning restaurant the Pig & the Lady and Piggy Smalls.

Dr. Nguyen has over 23 years of experience designing, implementing, and directing various programs/projects aimed at pressing issues faced by socially and economically disadvantaged communities in Hawaii and Asia-Pacific. He has expertise in community planning and development and urban governance, sustainability, and livability. Dr. Nguyen earned his doctorate from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Urban and Regional Planning. Born and raised in Hanoi, Vietnam, Dr. Nguyen has lived the experiences of an immigrant, and thus, profoundly embraces values and actions which contribute to assisting the uprooted and vulnerable populations, including refugees, immigrants, migrants, to thrive and gain self-sufficiency. He has been active in multiple initiatives and joint forces among the Federal and State agencies, the private sector, nonprofits, and civic organizations to engage and address needs from socially and economically disadvantaged constituents and communities.
