Update: Polio eradication efforts

Rotary aims to wipe out polio

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation challenged Rotary by pledging $355 million if Rotary can raise $200 million by June 2012. $555 million should provide the final push that will make polio the first human disease of the 21st century to be eradicated. To date, Rotary has raised over $180 million.

Since 1985 Rotary has worked to wipe polio from the face of the earth. In the last 26 years Rotary has contributed more than $1 billion and countless volunteer hours to fight this deadly disease. Polio remains endemic in four countries (Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan). Other countries are still at risk for imported cases.

Thanks to Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, the world has seen polio cases plummet by more than 99%. We are almost there.
