Over two years ago our club was approached to start up a new Rotary Club with a focus on the sort of activities and flexible program that would appeal more to younger potential Rotary members than traditional clubs.  We were up to the challenge and formed the Canberra Sundowners.  We recently had the opportunity to reflect with them on their achievements.
The Canberra Sundowners are a small group of people passionate about making a difference in our community and the wider world.  They punch well above their weight in terms of impact per member.  Their main focus areas for service projects are Maternal Health, Mental Health, Environment, Literacy Projects and Homelessness.
Some of the projects that this dynamic team have been engaged in over the last 12 months or so  include:
  • Helping Hands Project - $5000 raised towards buying 10 DIY prosthetic hands kits
  • Kindness Conquers All – project to help those experiencing homelessness by providing Sanitary and Food packs
  • Roundabout – local charity to support families with donations of quality baby items and clothes
  • St John’s Pantry Appeal – Donation of $200 worth of food
  • Donations – District 9710 Drought Appeal $300 donation
  • Menslink – Collection at Canberra Multicultural Festival
  • Clean Up Australia Day – 3 March
  • Cancer Council Relay for Life support – 23/24 March
More information on the Canberra Sundowners is available on their Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/canberrasundownersrotary/.  If you are the type of person that would like to contribute to the community and have a small amount of time available, maybe the Sundowners are for you.  Check them out!
