Dear Rotarians,

On this day 16 years ago, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which triggered major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defined the presidency of George W. Bush. (http://www.history.com/topics/9-11-attacks). We remember our brothers and sisters who perished in the attacks of 9-11.

We also remember all those effected by the Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. May God be with those currently in harm's way and may we be responsive to the things we can do to help whether it be meeting physical, emotional or spiritual needs. Our thoughts and prayers are with our fellow citizens as well as those in leadership who are aiding and assisting in the protection and relief efforts of all involved.

Last week it was good to hear from our good Sheriff Jim Hammond. I really appreciate his efforts to research and visit municipalities who are doing well and what he is trying to get accomplished here in Hamilton County. We wish him well in his endeavors.

This week we will hear from Kim Shumpert from Bethel Bible Village. She will be sharing with us about Bethel's impact in the lives of children and their families to help them through crisis. It's an excellent presentation you won't want to miss.

Announcements:

  • RYLA 2017 - Saturday, September 23rd. See Rotarian Dale Rardin if you would like to go

“Training Youth for Leadership Tomorrow”
  • Pictures for Directory - We are very appreciative that Rotarian Earl Story will have one of his Lifetouch photographers at our club meetings on October 23 and November 15 for our directory. We are wanting the directory to have a professional look to it so take advantage of one of these two days to have your photo taken by these skilled photographers.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday,

President Todd
Speaker - Kim Shumpert

Kim Shumpert, Director of Development

Bethel Bible Village

www.BBV.org

Kim will share about Bethel’s unique team, services, mission and impact – providing Christ-centered healing and hope until no child remains in crisis.  The “safety-net” programs and services Bethel provides to children and families can be an important resource to employers and community leaders.

Over her career, Kim Shumpert has worked in a variety of roles in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Her experience has spanned working through complex policy and organizational issues in government, education, private industry and family services. She returned to her hometown of Chattanooga in the spring of 2016 and began last fall as the Director of Development for Bethel Bible Village. She uses her experience in development, fundraising, organizational capacity building and community involvement to advance Bethel’s mission.

Kim believes that affecting change in a community is about building relationships that equip people to improve their lives and the lives of others through offering meaningful experiences. This philosophy drives her personal and professional pursuits. She and her husband Brad and their two daughters live in Signal Mountain and attend Clear Creek Church.

Sheriff Jim Hammond addressed the Rotary Club of Chattanooga Hamilton Place the day it was announced that he would assume oversight for the Silverdale Correction Facility.

Sheriff Hammond has 54 years of law enforcement experience, is a U.S. Navy veteran, and has been the Hamilton County Sheriff since 2008. He addressed the deterioration of the 45 year old downtown jail and his thoughts and strategy on diversion programs to reduce inmate population based on the successes of other larger cities. Regarding repeat offenders, Sheriff Hammond stated that less than 10% commit 90% of the crimes.
