County Manager John Slaughter
State of the County

In October 2013, County Commissioners selected John Slaughter as the Washoe County Manager. John has been with Washoe County since 1986, working as a land use planner, the County’s strategic planning manager, and as the Director of Management Services. He represented Washoe County at the Nevada Legislature from 2001-2013 and was named Acting Assistant County Manager prior to his appointment as County Manager.

As Washoe County Manager, John Slaughter serves as liaison between the Board of County Commissioners and elected and appointed department directors, governmental jurisdictions, community and business groups, employees, and county customers. He also oversees the Manager’s Office, which facilitates presentation of issues to the Board for their consideration and ensures effective implementation of direction given by the BCC. The Manager’s Office also houses the Communications division, Internal Audit division, and Management Services division.

John holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Emporia State University, and a Master of Urban Planning degree from the University of Kansas. He has also received the Continuing Education Certificate in Public Management from the University of Nevada, Reno.
