Leon Seemann, Executive Director

Leon, a recognized expert in non-profit management, has come home to the theatre after stepping away for ten years to spend more time with his children. A Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE), he has spent the past 20 years helping non-profits grow by ensuring they are “Well Funded, Well Managed, and Well Respected.” He has helped over a hundred non-profits in diverse fields including arts, education, Jewish community, associations, youth, geriatric, and economic empowerment.

Leon is a lifelong believer in the power of theatre to change young people’s lives. He worked at Center Stage in Baltimore for year after college before taking a year abroad. He returned to work at Studio Theatre in DC, where he served as General Manager and helped to almost double the size of the company over 8 years.

Leon was hired as the Managing Director of Adventure Theatre in June of 2017. In this short period of time he has helped to restructure the ATMTC Academy, navigate an extensive rebuild from an electrical fire at the theatre, and launch a comprehensive Diversity Initiative to literally change the face of the organization.

30th Annual Rockville Public Safety Awards
Date: June 12, 2019
Time: 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM EDT

Recognizing outstanding service by the members of the public safety agencies in the City of Rockville.

2019 Rockville Public Safety Awards

The Rockville Public Safety Awards program, now in its 30th year, in cooperation with the City of Rockville and the Rockville Chamber of Commerce, honors members of the Rockville City Police Department, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the Montgomery County Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department.

The annual program is sponsored by these community service clubs of Rockville:
  • Masonic Temple Montgomery-Cornerstone Lodge #195
  • Rockville Kiwanis Club
  • Rockville Lions Club
  • Rockville Rotary Club
  • Washington-Rockville Elks Lodge #15

This year, Tom from Masonic will be the host organization, and John Bean is our emcee. Pastor Stan Nelson will do the Invocation and Benediction.

The purpose of the program is to recognize outstanding achievements by the members of these public safety agencies based in the City of Rockville. All of us have benefited by the fine service we receive from our public safety agencies. The awards are presented at a luncheon each year. Over the years we have recognized seven individuals with a Medal of Valor, 68 with a Citation for Bravery, 248 with a Distinguished Service Citation, 192 with a Meritorious Service Bar, 15 civilians have been presented with a Rockville Community Service Award and since 2018, five Lifesaving awards, 2 Unsung Hero awards and one Lifetime Achievement award.

Please plan to attend this year’s ceremony to be held from 11:30am to 2pm on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at the Lakewood Country Club on Glen Mill Road in Rockville. What a way to show our appreciation to these award winners by being there and congratulating them yourself!

If you would like to attend and join us at our Rotary table, please contact Jim Gilchrist. To register on your own, visit https://www.rockvillechamber.org/events/details/30th-annual-rockville-public-safety-awards-10548

Don't miss speaker next week, January 17! It will be our own Bob Martin!

You’ll learn about the GLOBAL re-VISION Network I started back in 2002. It continues to this day, thanks in great measure to substantial support from our Club’s Foundation.

Since our first clinic opened in 2007, and at no cost to them, we’ve enabled between 100,000 and 200,000 people in the U.S., Mexico, and Haiti to regain clear eyesight. Our amazing technology makes it possible to accurately determine-and-fill eyeglasses prescriptions using donated, recycled eyeglasses in just a few minutes per patient.

I will talk about the enormous and unmet “need” for eyeglasses around the world. The statistics will surprise you! When I spoke to the club several years ago, I wanted to try and validate those statistics and invited Dr. Mary Frances Cotch, Chief of the Epidemiology Branch of the National Eye Institute at NIH to attend. After the meeting, she and I talked for a long time. What she said really surprised me!

She agreed with me that the estimated size of the world’s vision impairment problems (called uncorrected refractive errors) likely is 4 to 13 TIMES GREATER than organizations like the World Health Organization and others estimate it to be! The need for eyeglasses and corrected vision is a global public health problem of which few are aware. And, GLOBAL re-VISION is "fixing" it so easily! I'll show you how!

I hope you'll attend ... and since this is a project supported by our Club...please bring a friend and show'em what Rotarians do!

Bob Martin
