EVANSTON, Ill. (24 July 2015) —  It has been over one year since the last case of polio in Nigeria, the only remaining polio-endemic country in Africa. This achievement – the longest period has gone without a case of the paralyzing disease – could signal the world will soon see a polio-free Africa, a significant global health milestone.

Rotary has been a leader in the fight to eradicate polio since 1985, when it launched the first global initiative to immunize the world's children against polio: its flagship PolioPlus program. The organization has donated more than $1.4 billion to end polio

Here we are going into the third week of February and there seems to be no end to this very cold weather. I don't know about you but I am ready for a little warmer weather. If that groundhog was right we have about three more weeks of this kind of weather. I hope he is wrong.
What is happening in the Rich-Mar Rotary club. If you have not been to a meeting this year yet you have missed out on a lot of great programs. This past week we had Elaine Kramer from Pine Twp. and Larry from Pashek Associates. Their program was what is going on in Pine Twp. to improve the community character and appearance. They presented a slide program showing picture of Pine Twp as it is now and asked what people liked and disliked on what they saw. This program is being done with 5 different groups, Rotary being one of them and from the reply's they get, it will help them formulate a plan for improvement in Pine Twp. It was a very interesting program. This week's program is going to be one of our student of the month programs. Why not come and hear what these young people have to say about what is happening in their lives. This is always one of our clubs best programs.
If you read my article in last week's ebulletin, you read where Gary Weston and the Honduras Mission team left for Honduras to help many people in need. I asked you to be praying for them. I received a email from Bev Weston that Gary and the Mission Team will be back on Sunday February 15, 2015. I don't know about you but I look forward to hear from Gary Weston about the mission trip. Welcome back Gary.
Last Friday February 13, 2015 I emailed all Rich-Mar Rotarian's to keep our Rotary brother Tom McMeekin in your prayers. Tom suffered a heart attack and was in Passavant Hospital. Since then he has went through surgery and had 3 stents put in. He is doing well, but we still need to keep Tom in our prayers for a speedy recovery.
How are your raffle tickets sales coming. Remember the raffle drawing will be on March 4th at our Wednesday Rotary meeting. Please get out there and get the tickets you took sold. We have two books of tickets left to sell. If you need more please get a hold of me and I will get them to you. Let's all work to make this a successful raffle.
Reminder that we are meeting in Washington Place, a St Barnabas facility on Meridian Road in Gibsonia, for the rest of February and the first two weeks in March.
Hope to see you all on Wednesday

Ebulletin Article

Here we are, already starting into the third week of January 2015. We have had two great program so far this year and another this week. The first week was Neil Walker of the Pirates and Donnie Kelly of the Tigers. The second week we took a look at the video that was made for us of the Applefest. This week's program is going to be by Ken Fleeson on the Rotary Foundation. You need to be at the meeting to learn where the money is being used for from the Rotary Foundation.

This has been a great month so far as we have voted in two new members. First is Harry Austin of the James Austin Company. They are joining as a corporate member. Then we have Amanda Webster who visited us last week. She is also becoming a Rich-Mar Rotarian. Welcome to both of them. I hope a lot of the Rich-Mar Rotarians will be at our Wednesday meeting to welcome both of our new member to the club.

Next, the Rich-Mar Rotary club is going to hold a raffle to raise more funds to be able to do more in our community. I will have the tickets at this Wednesday January 21st meeting. I need all Rotarians to take at least two books of tickets and sell them. The drawing date will be March 4, 2015. The cost is $5.00 per ticket. There will be three prizes in this raffle. First prize is for two Penguins tickets for the March 15th game against the Detroit Red Wings. The seats are in a suite with free food and beer. The second prize is an autographed Penguin jersey of #9 Pascual Dupuis. The third prize is a unique display of Caricatures of seven Penguin stars all autographed. I hope to see all the Rich-Mar Rotarians at this week's meeting to pick up your tickets. Let's all work together to make this a success.

Reminder, February 2015 Wednesday meetings will be held at St. Barnabas due to Treesdale being closed for remodeling. More information coming later.

District Attorney, Richard Goldinger, sees drug and alcohol abuse as one of the most problematic issues in Butler County.  With a 10% + decrease in prosecuted DUI cases since beginning office, Attorney Goldinger stated treatment programs can be effective and prevent recidivism.  With drug use now topping at a third of all DUI cases, he urges parents to begin talking to their children as early as 10 and 12 about the risks of drug use.   Heroin use has been on the rise again in our local area. Attorney Goldinger stated 80% of heroin use began with an addiction to prescribed medication such as Percocet and Oxycodone.   Prescription drug drop boxes, now throughout Butler County, are a good way to clear out controlled substances that can be abused.

Several months ago Rich-Mar Rotary helped fund an innovative after-school program at Mars Area High School.  Students at Mars took part in the program along with students from Winchester Thurston, Pittsburgh Obama and South Fayette school districts.  The funding was provided through the Mars Foundation and the program taught students how to develop mobile computer applications (for smart phones and computer tablets).  Assistant superintendent, Matt Friedman, the course teacher, Rob Case and two students discussed, at our club meeting, the course and the mobile app competition they took part in at the Carnegie Science Center.  Student teams were assigned to different areas of the Center and were told to create designs for a mobile computer application that would be available for use at each exhibit and would increase visitors interest and knowledge of the exhibit.  One of the Mars teams was the winner and will get to work with personnel at the Science Center to create the actual computer apps that will eventually be used.
