Dec 11, 2021 9:00 AM - 11:00 PM
"Breakfast with Santa" is our Club's signature SERVICE PROJECT every year (this will be the 21st consecutive year we will provide out-reach consisting of gifts and grocery cards to help make Christmas special for selected kids and families in our community). Unfortunately, our consecutive streak of serving BREAKFAST was broken by the pandemic in 2020 and the new streak we had hoped to begin in 2021 will have to wait until 2022 as we continue to exercise caution and concern for the safety of the kids in our community. HOWEVER, we will be conducting a DRIVE-BY again this year for kids to "wave" at Santa and receive a goodie bag (NO hot meal and NO Santa photos). Contact us if you would like to help provide financial support and/or volunteer for the activities that will be required to conduct this year's event. Thank You. Dec 18, 2021 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
RED KETTLE HISTORY In 1891, Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry. During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken. He only had one major hurdle to overcome -- funding the project. Where would the money come from, he wondered. He lay awake nights, worrying, thinking, praying about how he could find the funds to fulfill his commitment of feeding 1,000 of the city's poorest individuals on Christmas Day. As he pondered the issue, his thoughts drifted back to his sailor days in Liverpool, England. He remembered how at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large, iron kettle called "Simpson's Pot" into which passers-by tossed a coin or two to help the poor. The next day Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read, "Keep the Pot Boiling." He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas. Six years later, the kettle idea spread from the west coast to the Boston area. That year, the combined effort nationwide resulted in 150,000 Christmas dinners for the needy. In 1901, kettle contributions in New York City provided funds for the first mammoth sit-down dinner in Madison Square Garden, a custom that continued for many years. Today in the U.S., The Salvation Army assists more than four-and-a-half million people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas time periods. Captain McFee's kettle idea launched a tradition that has spread not only throughout the United States, but all across the world. Kettles are now used in such distant lands as Korea, Japan, Chile and many European countries. Everywhere, public contributions to Salvation Army kettles enable the organization to continue its year-round efforts at helping those who would otherwise be forgotten.

CareBOX
Jan 25, 2022 12:00 PM
MEETING LOCATION: The Oaks (Legacy Hills GC) in Sun City The story behind the CareBOX Program is a personal one. First, our founders Jillian Domingue & Lisa Keefauver saw through the experiences of their loved ones & friends that there was a dire need for patients going through cancer treatments to have access to essential supplies at home. Because these supplies are typically not covered by insurance, CareBOX Program realized that many people were simply going without them, and their health was suffering as the consequence. Our personal observations were supported by devastating research. Once we became aware of the fact that one in five cancer-related deaths can be attributed to the effects of malnutrition alone, we knew what our mission would be: deliver free care supplies to cancer patients at home to prevent malnutrition, infections & injuries.

Preservation Georgetown Fund
Feb 15, 2022 12:00 PM
MEETING LOCATION: The Oaks (Legacy Hills GC) in Sun City America’s Bicentennial celebrations in 1976 sparked a nationwide preservation boom. In Georgetown, a group of citizens who had worked diligently on Georgetown’s Bicentennial celebration also had a heightened awareness of historic resources at the local level. It was the vision of this group that led to the formation of the Georgetown Heritage Society. As its name suggests, the organization’s mission is to preserve and promote interest in Georgetown’s heritage—its historic buildings and sites and the people associated with them, as well as the documents, pictures and other records relating to them. Among PG’s lasting achievements that all Georgetown citizens still enjoy today are organizing the first Christmas Stroll, reviving the old traditional May Fair (now the Red Poppy Festival), starting the Georgetown History and Visitor Information Center (now run by the City) and collecting a substantial repository of historic photographs and documents (now available in our living collection at Southwestern University's Special Collections). Today Preservation Georgetown works to fulfill our mission in a variety of ways. The most visible is the annual Home Tour, featuring several historic homes that are open to the public. Proceeds from the tour are used to support other PG initiatives including informative programs and educational publications. Most recently (2013), the Olive Street National Register Historic District was established in Georgetown; a project initiated, managed and funded by PG. The charge of the organization continues to expand to meet responsibly the growth and needs of the community – ever mindful of preserving the past for future generations. PG enjoys a cooperative relationship with the City of Georgetown, other organizations and the community; sharing resources, programming and facilities to promote historic preservation and heritage tourism.

Fostering Youth in Wilco (CASA)
Feb 22, 2022 12:00 PM
MEETING LOCATION: The Oaks (Legacy Hills GC) in Sun City When a child enters the foster care system because his or her home is no longer safe, a judge may appoint a committed volunteer to help them. That volunteer is called a Court Appointed Special Advocate®, or CASA. CASA of Williamson County continues to provide valuable volunteer advocacy for abused children in this area. CASA volunteers serve as the “eyes and ears” for the judge in child welfare cases. This includes researching each child’s situation and making objective recommendations to help them reclaim their childhoods from abuse and neglect. CASA volunteers are frequently the only stable presence in these children’s lives as they navigate the foster care system.

MEETING LOCATION: The Oaks (Legacy Hills GC) in Sun City Brookwood in Georgetown is a very “out of the box” innovative vocational community for adults with special needs where everything we make we sell in a beautiful high end gift shop, cafe and online store. We want to change the way our world views this population by taking the "status quo” of providing these individuals with custodial care to these individuals creating beautiful, marketable items to sell to help sustain the vocational community they enjoy everyday. They have become artisans, bakers, gardeners, card makers, jewelry makers, and more.

Rotary-sponsored Eye Care in Mexico
Apr 19, 2022 12:00 PM
MEETING LOCATION: The Oaks (Legacy Hills GC) in Sun City As an optometrist (originally from Nebraska but now living in Sun City), my wife and I have made four mission trips to Mexico to deliver eye care and eye glasses (22,000 pairs of eyeglasses, five or six doctors and a support staff of 25+). These trips were on our dime but were sponsored by the Rotary Club in Tucson Arizona in partnership with a Rotary Club in Hermasillio, Mexico. We saw upwards of three thousand patients in four days. We stayed at some locations at "about" a one star hotel. At one hotel we slept on a concrete slab with only a blanket for a mattress.

Travis County STAR Flight
May 10, 2022 12:00 PM
MEETING LOCATION: Georgetown Room (Cowan Creek) in Sun City STAR Flight has a unique and demanding mission profile. A typical shift may involve roles as first response EMS, critical care transport from outlying medical facilities, fire suppression, air rescue operations and law enforcement surveillance/pursuit. This requires individuals who are very experienced within their specialty areas and able to adapt to constantly changing environments. Physical fitness is of supreme importance in order to perform safely and effectively within the rescue environment. A typical STAR Flight medical provider has over 10 years of critical care/field experience. Background experience in rescue, wildland firefighting, and water lifesaving roles certainly help as well.
