Mastering Poker Math
Dec 17, 2019 12:00 PM
MEETING LOCATION: Mulligan's Restaurant in Sun City My primary education and professional experience is in engineering. Much of my career has been as a mechanical design and development engineer. I have also been a principal systems engineer, a principal quality engineer and a 6-Sigma Expert. I have a BSME from Michigan Tech University and an MBA from Pepperdine University. I am a 6-Sigma Expert and have an Advanced Communicator Gold in Toastmasters. Sports and games have always been a passion of mine. In the beginning of 2016 I started playing Texas No-Limit Hold’em and gravitated towards the game quickly. The math of the game fascinated me, so I read on it, pulled out a statistics book from my MBA program and learned how many of the probabilities are determined. I did many equations to understand the math at a visceral level. I initially played free roll tournaments in the Austin, Round Rock and Cedar Park Texas area to learn the game without breaking the bank. I also played at casinos when possible. My book Mastering Poker Math contains the knowledge, experience and insights into the math and other aspects of Texas No-Limit Hold’em that I have accumulated over time. I live in Georgetown Texas. Besides playing and studying Texas No-Limit Hold’em I enjoy dancing Argentine Tango, exercising, writing, studying the early space program, traveling and visiting with family & friends.

Walking the Appalachian Trail
Jan 07, 2020 12:00 PM
MEETING LOCATION: Mulligan's Restaurant in Sun City Eight pairs of boots and five months later, David Kellerman, a Georgetown businessman, did what few have been able to accomplish—he completed a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail and raised money for veterans along the way.
Kellerman, co-owner of Mel’s Lone Star Lanes, spent 161 days thru-hiking—walking from end-to-end in one trip—the 2,192-mile trail, which runs through 14 states from Georgia to Maine. Kellerman began the trail April 2 in Georgia and reached the top of Mount Katahdin in Maine on Sept. 9. But Kellerman said he knew if he was going to leave his job for five to six months it would have to be for a cause, so he decided to make a national fundraiser out of his trip and raise money for Bowl for Veterans, an organization he has worked with many times through his business. At the end, Kellerman’s journey raised $80,000 for veterans. |

To-Be-Determined
Jan 21, 2020 12:00 PM
MEETING LOCATION: Mulligan's Restaurant in Sun City Three Georgetown residents, including a former Army combat photographer in Vietnam and a retired major general, are planning to build a community where severely injured veterans can live in homes specially adapted for them and learn high-tech job skills. The community, called the Purple Heart Integration Project, will be the first of its kind in Central Texas, if not the nation, said Ted Acheson, one of the founders. Acheson and the other founder, Conley Giles, have started raising the money they need to buy 17.6 acres for the project on County Road 105 in the extraterritorial jurisdiction of Georgetown. Retired Maj. Gen. Michael Terry has joined the nonprofit project’s advisory board and is also helping raise money. Terry is a 35-year Army veteran whose service included being the commanding general for 21,000 troops in Iraq in 2006 in the 13th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. When the community is completed, it will feature 80 homes ranging from 400 to 1,200 square feet and an 8,000-square-foot facility with rooms for high-tech training, a co-working space, a computer lab and a health clinic, Giles said. It will also have a small banquet facility with a commercial kitchen, a swimming pool, a recreation center, raised gardens and a rainwater collection system. Construction of the first phase of the project could start early next year. It will feature 10 homes and the job training facility, as well as the swimming pool, the gym and the banquet facility. Veterans will rent the homes at the project and can stay in them for at least 18 months while learning job skills. They will be able to participate in a research and design facility at the project to help with home designs for people with significant physical challenges, Acheson said.

CANCELLED
Dear Rotarians,
Today your District Conference Committee met via conference call and it was decided we are going to cancel the District Conference scheduled for May 1-3 in Boerne, Texas. This was done in response to the National State of Emergency declared by President Donald Trump and the State of Disaster declared by Governor Greg Abbott on March 13, 2020. It was also done based on the CDC recommendation that all events of 50 or more be cancelled for a period of eight weeks, which would include our conference numbers and dates.
The main consideration for this cancellation was the health and safety of our members. I don't want anyone to feel obligated to make a three day obligation when the future of such events is so uncertain at this time. I don't want any member to be unnecessarily exposed to this extremely contagious virus.
This is without a doubt the hardest decision I have had to make during this Rotary year. The Bevy Hotel and City of Boerne was a perfect spot for our Celebration of Clubs. You all have done so many wonderful things this year that I was truly looking forward to being able to celebrate our accomplishments with everyone. I am just heart broken.
For those of you who have registered, we are in the process of getting your credit cards refunded the registration fee. Those of you who have booked rooms may have already received a notice of cancellation from The Bevy Hotel. Regarding any awards and recognitions scheduled, we will be letting you know soon how we will handle all of those.
Please be assured this action was not taken lightly. The current state of social distancing and the closures of schools, universities, churches and gatherings of all kinds has caused us to take this action to protect our members and their families. We did feel it was prudent to take this action at this time, without stringing it out any longer, since it does seem the controvirus issue is going to be with us for some time. I hope you all understand.
I am so proud of all of you and what you have accomplished so far this year. The year is not over and we can all continue to be of service to our communities. I appreciate the support I have received this year and I know all of you will continue the good work.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Jim Henry

Georgetown Public Library
May 05, 2020 12:00 PM
TODAY'S MEETING WILL BE VIRTUAL (via Zoom) Specific details (Zoom URL, meeting code, etc.) will be provided via email. Eric Lashley, director of the Georgetown Public Library, was named Librarian of the Year by the Texas Library Association in April. “This librarian has a history of innovation and indeed a reputation as a little bit of a maverick. I know (the Georgetown library) to be laser-focused on customer service,” said Gretchen Pruett, New Braunfels Public Library director, who presented the award to Lashley. She added that Lashley has worked to create a library that generates change within the Georgetown community. Lashley took over as director in 2000 and has since elevated the library to national recognition. In May 2018, the library was one of 10 recipients of the 2018 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, awarded by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Kalahari Resort
May 12, 2020 12:00 PM
TODAY'S MEETING WILL BE VIRTUAL (via Zoom) Specific details (Zoom URL, meeting code, etc.) will be provided via email. Kalahari Resorts has chosen Round Rock as the location of its fourth family resort and convention center. The City views this proposal as a game-changer for our community. Its proximity to Old Settlers Park and Dell Diamond – two well-established venues that together draw more than a million visitors annually – bodes well for a successful, tourism-oriented development. This is essentially a new industry for Round Rock that will provide substantial property tax revenues and diversify available employment opportunities.
