"Around the Majors in 60 Days"
Mar 21, 2017
A baseball lovers dream! Attend a home game in every stadium in America in one season. Ray Bergman's love of baseball, gained from attending Giants Games at the Polo Grounds in New York, created and drove an idea that led to this fantastic view of the entire world of baseball. A candid picture of each team and stadium, coupled with a historical chronology of the team changes and moves during this century. For those of us looking for a positive nostalgic look at baseball, this book is most refreshing and a pleasant read. Ray can only be faulted for his continuing loyalty to the Giants, and his continuing disparagement of the Brooklyn (L.A.) Dodgers. |

Georgetown, TX Fire Department
Mar 28, 2017
The Williamson County Sun reported, January 26, 1882, that the Hook and Ladder Company 1, of the Fire Department, was organized. Around the same time the Hook and Ladder Company was started, a second company, the Rescue Hose Company 1, was also organized. All personnel of those early years were volunteers. Three years after the Hook and Ladder Company was formed, the Williamson County Sun also reported, January 5, 1885, that a new fire house was being built north of the standpipe for the “truck and hose carts.” The Hook and Ladder was pulled by manpower to the fire, and then a bucket brigade sent water from the hose to the fire. This was primitive, compared to sophisticated equipment now, but it saved many homes and buildings in the community from serious loss. The organization of the Georgetown Fire Department happened rather soon after the great fire of Taylorsville (Taylor, Texas) on February 25, 1879. One can assume that this served as a warning to Georgetown and possibly other places. (History provided by Clara Scarbrough) |

Jul 06, 2017 8:45 AM - 3:30 PM
Our Club will prepare and serve lunch at RYLA Camp on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at McKinney Roughs Nature Park in Bastrop. Our Club will sponsor four campers from Jarrell High School this year. This is a great Rotary Service Project and provides an excellent chance to participate in one of our Club's many activities that support the youth in our community and area. VERY IMPORTANT: All volunteers MUST complete the 2017 Volunteer Form. The form is available online on the District 5870 website (or, just click HERE). It takes less than two minutes to complete. Meal preparation will be coordinated by Chef Heidi this year (Chris and Angel Martinez did it for many years, but they won't be there this time). Volunteers need to arrive at the Camp no later than 9:30 am to work. Remember, the "background check" form must be processed by District 5870 before you can volunteer (which means no last-minute signups). Submit the form NOW if you are considering participation. You can always cancel at the the last minute, if necessary, but you can't participate without the required paperwork. |
