Ok, we know it is right for you but is it right for someone who thinks they want to join Rotary?
Have a look on the District website.  Scroll down the left side of the home page and you will see this button:
We are asking all clubs to add this section to their own website.  The better informed someone is about Rotary BEFORE they join the better chance it is the right fit for them and they will stay and become engaged Rotarians.

Greetings All!
Just to give everyone a head's up about the change of meeting place for Feb 22nd, 2017. We will be meeting at Striker's Bowling Alley. When you arrive, please order right away as they have a small kitchen. They highly recommend the Appie Platters - they are $30 and good for 2 or 3 people. (And much easier for their small kitchen to handle.)
Burgers will be available, but will a limited selection of sides.
Bowling will be $7.50 per hour for the people that are bowling.
Best bowler in the club gets the coveted Wendela Trophy!

Junior Forest Wardens leader Mickey McCracken and Kate Caplin gave us a brief rundown on the organization.  It is now based in Alberta and Powell River is the last remaining Junior Forest Ranger Club in BC.  Without financial and organizational assistance it will be difficult to carry on.  Mickey was hoping that our club could assist with the purchase of workbooks for the young people.
Ironically in this time of declining participation, Junior Forest Rangers has more applicants than it can handle. Turns out that many in our club were involved in the past as members.

Sheila Gamble from Sechelt Club gave us a most interesting talk on Habitat for Humanity at our February 10 meeting. They offer a Hand Up not a Hand Out. There was considerable interest from members and we could possibly become a partner in this very timely project.  We will explore our options with her.

Arthur Arnold of PRISMA, gave us an update on how the former PRISMA students are doing and a rundown on this year’s activities. Former Powell River resident Tobin Stokes has written an opera about Rattenbury which it will be performed full length for the first time in Powell River April 5 as a PRISMA fundraiser.
The Rotary Club of Powell River has been a supporter of PRISMA since its inception, helping with a cash donation, assistance with a concert at Willingdon Beach, and with connecting prospective attendees with Rotary clubs in their areas.

Ian Burke, President of Powell River Health Care Auxiliary, gave us a history of the auxiliary its goals and projects and where it is headed for the future when he was our program speaker on February 3. There are 228 members and they raise approximately $250,000 each year for our community. The health-care auxiliary is moving its thrift shop next door to expanded premises and Ian invited Rotarians to come and see the new facility during a grand opening on February 20. It is located in the same strip mall as Scotia Bank.

Hi Wayne,
I am sure your donations are ready for shipment to Rotary Club of Cebu West in the Philippines loading of the container is on Saturday Oct 12.
The sewing machines donation will create a vocational project and generate income for the poor women in Cebu or Bohol.
We will open a dental clinic in the community where there is a need and install your dental equipment that you donated. The recipient will produce a book bind report with pictures of the beneficiaries of your donations.
I am organizing a Rotary Dental mission together with some dentists in the lower mainland next year on Jan 2-17, 2014.  Your dental equipment donations is a blessing on time of our mission.
It is great to know that you sent us an sterilizer. Thanks for looking one and we could use the sterilizer  during our dental mission in Bohol and Cebu.
Thanks a million for your effort and your clubs effort with the dental equipment donations.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Elena Agala

Hi Elena,

Just a quick follow up to the 10 pallets of dental supplies we recently sent down to Riverview.

We tried to pack each pallet with goods from the same piece of equipment so it will be easier to reassemble on arrival in the Phillipines.

Included on the pallets were 4 or 5 sewing machines for women in the area to use in the hopes of generating some income for their families.

Hope it all arrived safely and you have it tucked away until your shipment leaves for Cebu.

Rotary Member Scott Randolph outlined a project through a power point presentation that has been initiated by their office to assist and support businesses in the Powell River Region. With the assistance of Jennifer Salisbury as project manager of the Business Retention and Expansion Project

Powell River Regional Economic Development Society has partnered up with Powell River Community Futures and the Powell River Chamber of Commerce to launch a Business Retention and Expansion program (BR&E). Under the BR&E program, a survey was developed by the three agencies and administrative support was put in place to interview approximately 450 businesses in the region. So far 300 interviews took place and in collecting data from businesses it was determined what obstacles businesses are experiencing; levels of employment; and what gaps are in the marketplace. Out of this information 218 referrals were created. These were action items that identified where business could perhaps other businesses or where there was a gap in need that could be created by some of the other partnering agencies.

Scott gave an example of a glass manufacturer identifying a local need for disposing of it’s glass waste. PRREDS identified others with that need and between them and it’s partner agencies a company was created to collect and create a product out of the waste that could be presented to end users.

Scott surveyed the Rotary members with a show of hands on how many have been interviewed and thanked them for giving their time to Jennifer for the collection of the confidential information that is intended to strengthen local businesses and provide good information.

Boys and girls aged 5 to 12 were out for a fun bike rodeo at the Powell River Rec Complex on May 13th to test there bike riding skills and learn safety and traffic rules.
Rotary donated two bikes that were won by random draw and the winners got to go down to Taw's Cycle & Sport to be sized up for their brand new bikes. Grade 3 student, Bria Jones, and grade 6 student, Colin McQuarree, were the lucky winners.
Thanks to John Hall for organizing this great event for the kids of Powell River.
