At Temple Rotary’s regular July 24 meeting, President-Elect Gail Peek moderated a riveting discussion on “Thoughts on Education Challenges and Opportunities in the Twenty-First Century.”

Panelists included:

  • Dr. Susan Kincannon, Belton Independent School District Superintendent
  • Dr. Bobby Ott, Temple Independent School District Assistant Superintendent
  • Dr. Mark Smith, Temple College Vice President, Educational Services

Each panelist discussed their respective organization’s mission statement.  Temple ISD and Temple College both mention “lifelong learning.”  Belton’s largest challenge is population growth.

One takeaway from the discussion was the trend toward vocational training.  Years of heavy standardized testing are swinging back toward career centered education, with opportunities for employers to participate in the school system.
