A Saturday morning where Bahari members and their families can come together to be creative and interact with some of the communities we serve.

All members are welcome to join us in this fun filled morning.

Why we join Rotary

20 Reasons why we join Rotary:
  1. Friendship: In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friendship and fellowship. It is one of two reasons why Rotary began in 1905.
  2. Business Development: The second original reason for Rotary’s beginning is business development. Everyone needs to network. Rotary consists of a cross section of every business community. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotarians help each other and collectively help others.
  3. Personal Growth and Development: Membership in Rotary continues one’s growth and education in human relations and personal development.
  4. Leadership Development: Rotary is an organization of leaders and successful people. Serving in Rotary positions is like a college education.  Leadership: – learning how to motivate, influence, and lead leaders.
  5. Citizenship in the Community: Membership in a Rotary club makes one a better community citizen. The average Rotary club consists of the most active citizens of any community.
  6. Continuing Education: Each week at Rotary there is a program designed to keep one informed about what is going on in the community, nation, and world.  Each meeting provides an opportunity to listen to different speakers and a variety of timely topics.
  7. Fun: Rotary is fun, a lot of fun. Each meeting is fun. The club projects are fun. Social activities are fun. The service is fun.
  8. Public Speaking Skills: Many individuals who joined Rotary were afraid to speak in public. Rotary develops confidence and skill in public communication and the opportunity to practice and perfect these skills.
  9. Citizenship in the World: Every Rotarian wears a pin that says “Rotary International.” There are few places on the globe that do not have a Rotary club.  Every Rotarian is welcome – even encouraged – to attend any of the 29,000 clubs in194 nations and geographical regions. This means instant friends in both one’s own community and in the world community.
  10. Assistance when Traveling: Because there are Rotary clubs everywhere, many a Rotarian in need of a doctor, lawyer, hotel, dentist, advice, etc., while traveling has found assistance through Rotary.
  11. Entertainment: Every Rotary club and district has parties and activities that providediversion in one’s business life. Rotary holds conferences, conventions, assemblies, and institutes that provide entertainment in addition to Rotary information, education, and service.
  12. The Development of Social Skills: Every week and at various events and functions,Rotary develops one’s personality, social skills and people skills.  Rotary is for people who like people.
  13. Family Programs: Rotary provides one of the world’s largest youth exchange programs; high school and college clubs for future Rotarians; opportunities for spouse involvement; and a host of activities designed to help family members in growth and the development of family values.
  14. Vocational Skills: Every Rotarian is expected to take part in the growth and development of his or her own profession or vocation; to serve on committees and to teach youth about one’s job or vocation. Rotary helps to make one a better doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc.
  15. The Development of Ethics: Rotarians practice a 4-Way Test that governs one’s ethical standards. Rotarians are expected to be ethical in business and personal relationships.
  16. Cultural Awareness: Around the world, practically every religion, country, culture, race, creed, political persuasion, language, color, and ethnic identity is found in Rotary. It is a cross section of the world’s most prominent citizens from every background. Rotarians become aware of their cultures and learn to love and work with people everywhere. They become better citizens of their countries in the process.
  17. Prestige: Rotary members are prominent people: leaders of business, the professions, art, government, sports, military, religion, and all disciplines. Rotary is the oldest and most prestigious service club in the world. Its ranks include executives, managers, professionals – people who make decisions and influence policy.
  18. Nice People: Rotarians above all are nice people – the nicest people on the face of the earth. They are important people who follow the policy of it is nice to be importantbut it is important to be nice.
  19. The Absence of an “Official Creed”: Rotary has no secret handshake, no secret policy, no official creed, no secret meeting or rituals. It is an open society of men and women who simply believe in helping others.
  20. The Opportunity to Serve: Rotary is a service club. Its business is mankind. Its product is service. Rotarians provide community service to both local and international communities. This is perhaps the best reason for becoming a Rotarian: the chance to do something for somebody else and to sense the self-fulfillment that comes in the process and return of that satisfaction to one’s own life. It is richly rewarding.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS DAY (17TH Nov 2012)
REPORTED BY ROTARACT CLUB OF KWANZA, UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAAM

An estimated 2,500 women with breast cancer are registered as patients in hospitals in Tanzania each year. Of that number, only about 300 make their way to Tanzania’s only specialist cancer hospital Ocean Road Cancer Institute (The Citizen, January 2011).

The Rotaract Club of Kwanza decided to organize the Breast Cancer Awareness event which was aimed at informing the University community with major emphasis on the girls about the occurrence, signs and treatment of breast cancer.

As expected, Baharians discussed their experiences of "doing business' in Tanzania and weighing options of qualifying for investments under EPZA.  An elaborate Vote of Thanks was delivered by our seasoned Rotarian Zain.

Visit to Buyuni

On Sunday, the 21st of October, Rotarians JeanPaul, Hilu and her daughter and I met at Serena parking lot at 10:00 am, got in my little fuel efficient Toyota Primio and drove to Buyuni, which is 25 km from Dar es Salaam, furhter down 17 km  from Chanika forest.  After passing Chanika and driving for a while, we knew we were lost and called Deo, our extremely enthusiastic and committed Director, Service Projects, who had initiated this visit.  Deo came to our rescue by appearing on the backseat of a pikipiki to take us to Buyuni.  We found ourselves off the tarmac road and in the middle of nowhere,  surrounded by the blue skies, scattered homes - some with bright  colorful rooves, huts, goats and surprised by a sudden appearance of a small family of ducks.   Deo made sure that he took us on a sight seeing tour of Buyuni, where he has built his residential home - a shed, as he calls it..

After about 30 minutes drive on dirt-road, we reached Zavara, Buyuni, which is 7 km by foot from the tarmac road and were recieved by Sister Andrew of Ursuline Sisters of Mary Immaculate working in the Archidiocese of Tanzania.  The congregation is actively involved in education and youth empowerment and have recently constructed a building with 2 classrooms - 1 classroom is used for kindergarten age and the other for teachning maths and english to >5 year olds. Zuobia Dhalla, our Immediate Past President has recently facilitated donation of playground equipment for the school and Deo's 5 year old daughter Rita was enjoying the swings.

we concluded the visit with delicious lunch cooked by the sisters.  We were indeed overwhelmed by their warm hospitality.

Our visit objective was to determine if Zavara would qualify as a potential RCC site for our club and we returned to Dar es Salaam convinced and full of plans to adopt and make a difference in this community.

Zanzibar Ferry Tragedy
On 10th September 2011, the ferry M.V. Spice Islander, travelling between Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Pemba and Tanga, capsized in deep waters in the Pemba Channel, north of Zanzibar island. The true numbers of those injured or dead in the tragedy has yet to be established, but it is now acknowledged that there were many more passengers than the 610 listed on the ship manifest. The Rotary Club of Bahari donated Tsh 5million towards supplying medical supplies and support for the survivors of the tragic event.

Family Picnic Day

The Family of Rotary Picnic was well attended by fellow members from Bahari.

The day was overcast and fairly cool. The queue at the ferry was long and many members drove round to the site.

The venue was kindly organized by Rtn Jimmy Zibarras who allowed us to use his premisis in Kigamboni. The site houses 6 holiday cottages and a large baraaza for entertainment.

Rtn Palani geared up Pepsi to provide the much needed tables and chairs for the event.. A large truck with a ghetto blaster provided the music, which was hijacked by Rtn Harish's son. Between Akash and Rtn Thamarai the music was "Bollywood" and "retro".

The committee had set up some games for all the Rotarians to participate in.

We all had a hand at playing cricket, boulle and kicking the ball through a hole. The best part of the day was participating in musical chairs- some say this is a game for kids parties- but it was fun for Rotarians of all ages. We did try to let the kids win-!

The food provided by all was just mouthwatering. From fish to South Indian idlii to samosas and biriyani. It was a feast!

Sadly by 5pm we all had to pack up and go back to Dar. However, some Rotarians that yearned for a cup of tea went next door and enjoyed the sun set at South Beach.

Salsa Night

The Family of Rotary organized a Salsa evening on  6th August at the Sweet Easy Restaurant.

The night was organized by our own salsa dancer and teacher Lotus Menezes.

The evening was very successful. There were many Rotarians and non-Rotarians at the function. Lotus had decorated the hall and entrance with our banners- a nice twist to our logo!

Rtn. Bhakti sensitized the crowd with what Rotary is all about and a few of the projects that Bahari are currently undertaking. Rtn. Vasant was very kind to present 2 gift vouchers for the winners of the competition.
