Today's Program
  • Happy New Year!! 3 weeks is a long time between meetings with a lot of holiday-days thrown in. It was nice to see so many Members on Monday to start 2020. Together we can accomplish much! What area of Service are YOU interested in helping with?
  • Happy birthday to David Tanck on 1.7, Sue Boettcher on 1.8, and Joe Shere and Ray Kitson on 1.12! Ray has been a Member of our Club for 66 years this month! Kats Neeno has reached 61 years as a Member. 60+ year longevity is admirable and so valuable to the service history of Janesville Noon Rotary.
  • Becky reported that the Holiday Light Show had 50,602 visitors this year, and more than a few engagements took place. If you have working lights that you would like to donate to add beauty to the show this year, contact Becky.
  • Tim reported that the Tallman tree event drew 10 times as many visitors than last year, with 75% coming from outside of Rock County. There will be even MORE trees shining in December at Tallman House.
  • Congratulations to 2 of our members who are being recognized by Forward Janesville this month at the Awards luncheon: Mick Gilbertson as the FJI Volunteer of the Year, and Nate Burkhart as the FJI Emerging Leader award. Thanks for all you do to make our Community a better place to live!
  • President Mandy read a lovely thank you note from Laura Owens, a recipient of our 4H Achievement Award. It all started with a goat by the side of the road...
  • The $28 Raffle was won by lucky Madge Murphy and the JP of $475 rolls over.
  • Our speaker next week will be Author Gregory Lee Renz, whose book Beneath the Flames was published in 2019. You can read the great reviews here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/46122495-beneath-the-flames
Janesville Jets were our presenters today. Shelton Tripp, who knew little about hockey before coming to Janesville 16 months ago, reminded us that the Jets were started 11 years ago during a bleak time in Janesville as GM and all the ancillary companies left. The NAHL team (level between High School and College) has 3 pillars of focus: to provide affordable family fun, advance and develop players to get them Division 1 opportunities, and provide community service. He emphasized how the community involvement, extended Billet family relationships and friendships help develop the players. Coach Randy Childs played in Janesville for the Jets and returned to coach and spoke of the strength the Billet family structure provides. Three players also spoke to us abut their experiences: Parker (center), Justin (center) and Nick (right wing). Parker hails from Madison and found the adjustment to living in Janesville easy. While an injury has limited is playing time this year, he has been signed by Northern MI. Nick spoke of the Billet family connections and support and will be playing for MI Tech. They play in a 26 team league with teams from Alaska to Texas. Players are scouted and recruited and sign tender agreements to move to Janesville and play for the Jets. Around 200 players come to try out to get a spot on the team as well. The Jets have a great track record of placing over 110 players with Division 1 positions. If you haven't attended a Jets game and want to see the action in person, come with our Club to the game on January 31st. Sign up will be sent out by Mandy. Note: the players love to hear their names yelled!
