Todays Meeting
- Happy birthday this week to Madge on 3.9 and Gregg on 3.13!
- Pres. Randy shared the news that Bob Yahr (Dr. Robert) passed last week and announced that our Club will make a $100 donation in his honor, and also in honor of Hal Robb and Bob Kimball. The family is being assisted by Schneider Funeral Home.
- Our SOM today was Kayley Ellis. You can watch her presentation in the meeting Zoom link.
-  SAVE THE DATE: District 6250 Conference will be held April 18-24. District Conferences are an excellent way to learn more about Rotary and get an infusion of passion for all that we accomplish. If you haven't attended before, I highly recommend making time for this virtual conference.
- Derek: if you are responsible for sending photos or presentations for an upcoming meeting, send to him at: noonrotaryscholarship@gmail.com until further notice. He is asking for more Rotarians to assist with our meeting technology. Please reach out to him and let him know how you can help.
- Pres. Randy read the list of donation items requested by Milton Food Pantry and an email was sent to all members.
- This month we are partnering with Janesville Community Center. Cassie sent an email with this volunteer request from Fr.Earl:
"We will be revitalizing a community garden here at our location on Lincoln St. most likely Saturday March 27th starting at 10 am.
It hasn't been maintained for a couple of years and needs a good weeding and the raised beds rebuilt. Or do you need it to be a weekday event?
We will name it the 'Garden of Eatin' and it will be used to teach families to be more self-reliant by growing some of their produce and sharing produce with neighbors." Reply back to Cassie if you would like to get your hands dirty and help out.
- If you're interested in helping design a new Janesville Noon friendship Banner, please let me know. When some designs have been accumulated, we will have members vote on our future Banner. The designer will have the honor of knowing the Banners will be given to people and Clubs around the Country and the world for a long time to come. It's been suggested that we not get too 'project' specific so our Banner doesn't get obsolete. What does Janesville Noon Rotary evoke in you, and can you put it into a design?
- If you're interested in taking a District Grant Management Seminar, the next is on 3.17 at 5:30 PM.
- Pres. Randy conducted a vote on approving the RI Constitution so we can add it into our documents section of the website.
It was our pleasure to welcome Robert Gooze as our speaker today to share The What, Why, and How of a Cancer Clinical Trial. Nine years ago his wife Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer. Two years after completing treatment she learned it had returned as metastatic breast cancer (MBC, Stage 4), which has a terminal diagnosis. Since that time, the couple have reviewed over 300 research projects and are working with the Carbone Cancer Center and educating people on the benefits and steps in Clinical trials. The National Institute of Health defines a clinical trial this way: A research study in which one or more human subjects are prospectively assigned to one or more interventions (which may include placebo or other control) to evaluate the effects of those interventions on health-related biomedical or behavioral outcomes. Only 1 in 1,000 potential treatments progress to human testing via a clinical trial- the 4 phases can take many years and only 1 in 5 drugs gets FDA approval after phase 3. Patients have to research clinical trial options themselves. You will learn more in his presentation about that topic and what he & Mary are doing to advance funding (1.2 million raised) and research for MBC. She has an inspirational website, www.onewomanmanylakes.org, where you can follow her story and be inspired. Bob is a fellow Rotarian and has ties to our Club and community- watch and learn more!
