Today's Program
Invocation given by: Derek Wickhem

  • MariVi thanked everyone who supported her Spring trip expenses by purchasing cookies last week. She needs $500 deposit in March, and cost of the trip will be around $2,250. She attended the Polar Bear Plunge in Beaver Dam last weekend, but no plunging, thank you, due to her zero tolerance for freezing. She scored really high in Forensics competition recently.
  • Birthdays: Jackie Gackstatter 1.31. Happy birthday!
  • Community Grant applications are being accepted until 2.28. The application is on our home page www.janesvillerotary.org. Pass the word on to any agencies you think would be interested in applying. If you're interested in being on the review committee, contact me or look for an email with details.
  • Vicki wrapped up announcements on our Endowment Fund with visual aids. Think of our Club as having 3 different money pots. Our Club 'pot' handles membership dues, meals, donations to the RI Foundation, and Madge Murphy is the Treasurer. Our Club Foundation is a 4013c, and into that 'pot' goes the money we raise through our fundraisers. What goes out of that 'pot' are the funds we use to pay for Scholarships, Community Grants, and all the programs we support, and Vicki is the Treasurer. Our Endowment 'pot' stays here in our Club in perpetuity, or 'until hell freezes over', and is the cornerstone of our foundation. Every year, a percentage of the Endowment Fund goes into our Foundation 'pot' to support our programs/budget. You can contribute to the Endowment Fund quarterly, annually, through your estate planning, or as a Trust. Consider supporting our Club through the Endowment Fund for generations to come.
  • Janelle Sharp has compiled an Invocations Binder (White) which will be kept on the back table where you sign in. If you haven't signed up to do an Invocation yet, please do so! If you haven't done it in a while, it's your turn again, so pick a date. There are Invocation examples in the Binder if you have one of those "Wait! It's MY turn today?" moments, and Tom usually has some as well.
  • Raffle: $23 was won by Janelle, who was kind enough not to pull the Joker and let the pot build.
Jim McMullen was our speaker today, discussing Kandu's upcoming Grapes and Hops event. What started as a wine and tapas tasting event 9 or 10 years ago to increase awareness and support of Kandu's Mission, has evolved into a 'Celebration of Wine and Beer' with 40 varieties of foreign and domestic wine and beer. Heavy hor d'oeuvres and entertainment by Duane Worden compliment the event, which features local "celebrities", including our very own Crystal and JoLynn!! JoLynn will be dressing up as her beer selection, and Crystal plans a Studio 54 theme to go with her Champagne pours. They are BOTH selling tickets, and would love to see all our Members at the event. All Celebs compete for 4 'prestigious awards including Peoples Choice. Tickets are $50 in advance, $60 at the door.
Jim talked about the employment opportunities that Kandu provides, including the Return to Work program that companies can use instead of unemployment compensation claims- workers generally get back to their jobs much faster. He briefly discussed how Family Care will be affecting the current client workers and the 220 or so who are on a waitlist. This is changing and evolving....

The Atlanta Host Organization Committee is offering some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality at the Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. It has planned a wide range of activities featuring everything from good food and music to inspiring tours of local landmarks. If it’s your first convention, these events are chances to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world, and if you’re an experienced convention goer, you can catch up with old friends. Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron will host Rotarians for a “Strike Out Polio” night at the new SunTrust Park, where you’ll...

When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia. “I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...

Battling breast cancer in 2000, Kathryn Smith found comfort pursuing her lifelong interest in Franklin D. Roosevelt. The more she read, the more intrigued she became with the 32nd U.S. president’s private secretary, Marguerite Alice “Missy” LeHand. “I thought, what a fascinating life she had because she was by his side through the polio crisis, establishing the polio rehabilitation center in Warm Springs and then after his return to politics,” she says. Smith, a past president of the Rotary Club of Greater Anderson, S.C., and a longtime newspaper journalist, turned that curiosity into a book...

One of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s earliest memories is of fleeing with his family into the mountains during the Korean War, his village burning behind him. His father and grandfather had to forage for food in the woods; his mother gave birth to his siblings away from anything remotely resembling a health facility. “I have known hunger,” he says. “I have known war, and I have known what it means to be forced to flee conflict.” The soldiers who came to their rescue were flying the blue flag of the United Nations. The UN provided them with food and their schools with books....

Like a lot of us, I spent much of my childhood riding bikes, but fell out of the habit for a while. Forty years. Then my wife and I moved to New York, where cyclists risk their necks in a daily Thunderdome of cabs, police cars, firetrucks, double-decker buses, messengers on motorbikes, and delivery trucks backing around corners at 20 miles an hour. Not for me! At least not until my 50th birthday, when my metabolic furnace flamed out. Calories started going directly from beer bottle to beer belly. It was time to start exercising. Either that or give up Samuel Adams, and I couldn’t do that to...
