Paul Harris Fellow
Paul Harris once said, “Perhaps dreaming is not so bad if one dreams good dreams and makes them come true.” In Rotary, we make dreams a reality through extraordinary projects and activities here at home and around the world. These projects would not be possible without the generous support of Rotarians and friends of our Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation recognizes individuals who pledge to contribute $1,000 or more annually to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus, or approved Foundation grants with membership into the Paul Harris Society. When their contributions reach that amount, they are recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.
Today we honored our newest member of the Paul Harris Society AND our newest Paul Harris Fellow, Danielle Jones! She received her Society Chevron and Paul Harris Pin, and a standing ovation!

Congratulations, Danielle!

Today's Program

  • Happy birthday this week to Lonnie on 2.10 and Linda on 2.14!
  • Mark's invocation referenced a program about Friendship Benches. If you'd like to learn more and listen to Dixon Chibanda's TED talk about how his program began and how we can all, in our own way, be a supportive Friendship Bench for those who need it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWBuPf-eTZc
  • Thank you to Lisa for stepping up and agreeing to attend the Grants training seminar in Madison this week. Our Club cannot apply for a District Grant during 2020-2021 without a member going through current training.
  • Have you signed up with Dave Warren for the next Supper Club Fellowship outing  at Benedetti's on Thursday March 5th at 6:15 PM? This historic club is well known throughout the area for their meals and especially for their mounded and delicious ice cream drinks! Newer members are encouraged to come.
  • Thanks to the generous donations of previous weeks and the 'hat' passed today, the Haiti group has $600 to buy materials to take and donate to the Orphanage and medical clinic they'll be visiting. Bad news: Haiti Outreach started drilling 'our' well and the area came up dry. Hopefully by the time our group arrives they'll have successfully reached a spot to drill.
  • Our Community Grants application is open until the end of February. The application is on our home page and a link is pinned at the top of our FB page.
  • We have a 5th Monday (no meeting) outing planned at Conway & O'Rileys. Sign up sheets are being sent around. Corned Beef is offered but not mandatory!
  • The $20 daily was won by Gary and JP of $578 rolls over.

Gregg Dickinson spoke to us today about his travels and work in Nicaragua and gave us some historical perspective on how the Country arrived at it's current state. I won't try and summarize the history- Gregg's knowledge is comprehensive and I would fail at summarizing everything he said- Wikipedia does an OK job of history from 1909 to present day.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicaragua

Gregg reflected on some of the big factors that affect the Country-corruption, violent and brutal civil wars, Dictatorships, natural disasters, the low literacy rate and high poverty. His first trip to Nicaragua was in 2009 on a cruise to Central America. They found the country to be beautiful with welcoming people, great food and fruit, but some issues that hampered tourism such as trash management. Shortly after that he received a brochure from Health Volunteers Overseas that asked a question that resonated with him: How many lives can you touch when you teach? He traveled to and taught many students over 6 years, teaching anesthetic and proper filling procedures to faculty and students. They adopted his teachings, and after 6 years he felt that the training was well established. The current political unrest and policies combined with his history of travel make it unwise for him to return at the present, but his affection for the Country shines through.
