CLUB BUSINESS
  • President Elect Mike Dillis greeted members and guests at the door today.
  • President Jay Hinkens called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone at 12:15 PM.  In honor of Martin Luther King's birthday, Jay recalled Dr King's history and values.  We could use the 3 C's mentioned on a local radio program today in most areas of our life: stay Calm, be Courteous, and use Common sense.  The club recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Rotary International's 4-Way Test.
  • President Jay noted member milestone dates in January many of which are mentioned in the left banner of the newsletter.
  • Brat Czar Mike True passed the sign up sheet for the Brat Stand Victory Party on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Babes, 5614 Schroeder Rd, Madison 5:30-8 PM.  Let Mike know if you'd like to be part of the planning committee which will meet at Babe's this Tuesday 5PM.
  • The Fifth Monday event will be Monday, January 29 4:30 PM at Madison Circus Space, 2100 Winnebago, Madison followed by club fellowship at a TBD nearby location.  THERE WILL BE NO LUNCH MEETING AT THE SHERATON ON JANUARY 29.
  • President Jay announced Deborah Herman's name a second time for membership approval.  Approved by both the board and the membership at large, Debby will be inducted probably next week.  Her sponsor is Ginny Olson.
  • Sergeant-at-Arms Ginny Olson introduced today's guests:
    • Kevin Lewis, Channel 3 and Fox-47 sportscaster, today's speaker
    • Tom Lucas, Downtown Rotarian and honorary MSR member
    • McKenna Ingalls, daughter of Tara Ingalls
  • Happy/sads were shared by Mike Dillis, McKenna Ingalls, Tom Lucas, and Aaron Frank.
  • The Jack of Heart Raffle continues!
TODAY'S PROGRAM
President Elect Mike Dillis introduced Kevin Lewis Channel 3000 and Fox-47 TV sportscaster on "How I got to be a TV sportscaster."  Growing up in Columbia, Missouri, Mr Lewis comes from a family of professional academics.  As "a family outlier" Kevin enjoyed watching TV and following sports.  A degree from Marquette University in Broadcast and Electronic Communication (with a minor in Spanish) enabled him to turn his passion into a profession.  He's worked in Columbia, Missouri and Tucson, Arizona, returning to Wisconsin in 2012.  Even though he's a Cubs and Bears fan, Kevin likes all Wisconsin sports and the fans.

His workday can begin about 1 PM and end around 11 PM.  Sports schedules determine his schedule.  Working for both WISC Channel 3000 and Fox-47, Kevin needs to move quickly from research, onsite interviews and video, to his office, to studio broadcasting.  He has seen a lot of changes both in how consumers get their news with an increased emphasis on instant smart phone/computer  news and how the on air TV segments are portioned.  Political news takes precedence moving other segments down the time slot. Increased weather coverage often cuts into sports news.  It is the local high school sports scene that cannot be found instantly online and often makes an interesting, unique  story.  Mr Lewis tries to reach out to the good programs in smaller schools that generally don't get as much coverage.  While these stories appeal to many viewers, they may become rarer as time to research the stories and travel to the outlying schools decreases.  Viewers and relatives of high school players whose names he sometimes mispronounces on air leave "interesting comments" on his voice mail--a subject for another presentation perhaps.  Mr Lewis has great admiration for the producer, especially of the nightly hour long program.  A lot is going on that one person is juggling in real time.  It is good teamwork that makes a newscast work.

While spicing his presentation with a lot of humor, Mr Lewis got more serious as he summed up:  "I get to go cool places and meet cool people. I never take that for granted."

OUR NEXT MEETING IS
