Rotary Announcements

  • Full Moon Social on May 15 at Kitsap Mall.  Invite guests - everyone is welcome!

This will be a mix of healthy, work-place inspired exercises followed by a social at World of Beer.

The Silverdale Rotary Club, Kitsap Mall and Expansions Yoga are teaming up to provide a community event on Wednesday, May 15th in the Community Space at Kitsap Mall.  Led by Expansion Yoga’s co-owner and yoga teacher Sarah Hamilton, come spend about 20 minutes learning about effective, low-impact exercises you can do in your office chair or standing to help flexibility, re-energize, and relieve the stresses caused by your working environment.

This class has no requirements!  You need not be flexible, have ever done yoga, nor even be working to benefit from a focus on quick, effective exercises you can do in the spare moments of your day to stay more active.  The class will include hand-outs with some stretching prompts you can do at home or in the office.

This event will be promoted by the Mall and open to the community.  Following the event the Rotary Club will relocate to World of Beer, in their private space, and have a Full Moon Social  from 5:30 – 7:00 pm.  Weather permitting we could even slide out onto the deck!  Plan to come out for either event or both of them!

When:  Wednesday, May 15th 5:00 pm (drinks and social at 5:30)

Where:  Community Room, Kitsap Mall (in the Mall across from H&M retail), then World of Beer from 5:30 - 7:00 pm

What to wear:  Anything you want!  Wear work-day clothes.  No work-out clothes required.  In fact, to enjoy how flexible and adaptable these exercises are you should wear what you wear every day.

  • Silverdale Rotary is still collecting for the Comfort Closet for CKSD. Items can be collected at our weekly luncheon or can be delivered to the Kitsap Mall Management Office (across from Baskin Robbins and down the hall – open Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:30pm). A most recent need mentioned is female pre-teen underwear and socks.

Keep making a difference for our young people! Below is a Thank You note from CKSD.

  • Rotary Foundation Chair Steve Slaton was just awarded his Paul Harris Fellow +8 pin (that's just one step away from becoming a $10,000 Major Donor!).  Thank you, Steve, for walking the talk and continuing to support The Rotary Foundation.

  • Youth Exchange -  Ruby attended the District 5020 Training and Conference May 9-11.  This was her last opportunity to see all the District 2018-19 Exchange Students.  Time is getting short - Ruby would like to see some more museums

  • Smoke Detectors – Exciting Opportunity to Work with Fire Fighters.  Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue Chief John Oliver announced that the Kitsap County Regional Red Cross has promised an “unlimited supply” of smoke detectors to residents who need them, but identifying those households is the challenge.  If you know of a home lacking a detector, talk to CKFR staff.
Also, starting in May, CKFR firefighters will start canvassing all mobile home parks in the CK area, testing the detectors already in place, and replacing or placing new ones where needed.  Here is the exciting part – Rotarians can go along!  If you would like to participate and “hang with firefighters,” contact Community Service Chair Mary Hoover who will coordinate scheduling with CKFR staff.

Silverdale at District Training and Conference 2019
Let's start our re-cap of the Silverdale Rotary presence at the District 5020 District Training and Conference 2019 on May 9-11 where it belongs: our incoming President Christie Scheffer.  This year's conference offered early starts every day and a late ending the last night.  Which meant arriving the day before the events and leaving the morning after;  three evenings of "hospitality" in the President-Elect's suite.  Well, with at least a little help from daughter and Rotarian Brianna, Christie knocked it out of the park.

I've looked back on this conference and feel it's the best one I've been a part of in my ten years of Rotary.  Fellowship is always a big part of that.  With 14 Silverdale Rotarians attending we had an outstanding presence.  In addition, the training appealed to me, and the day of guest speakers were amazing.   Our photo below -- we're missing a couple of us -- was a nod to one of the impressive speakers, Paul Chappell, who spoke about growing up in a violent household, going to to West Point, and serving our country in the Gulf War; and all efforts to address a growing rage inside of him.  In his post-military life he established a foundation teaching "peace literacy." The story of the forks we're holding will have to wait.

Back row: Matej Kunak, Past Pres Ed Hamilton, Brianna Miller, Peggy Templeton, Pres Elect Christie Scheffer, Jennifer Strong, Past Pres Elayne Burton, Steven Boe, PDG Don Lachata, Bob Cassis, Kathy Cassis

It's already been decided that the 5020 District Training and Conference in 2020 will be in Victoria.  Let's all go!

Rotary Recognizes Students of the Month

Silverdale Rotarians were pleased to host our last group of Rotary Students of the Month for the 2018-19 school year.  All three high schools that we support were represented at our meeting this month: Central Kitsap High School (CKHS), Crosspoint Academy, and Klahowya Secondary School. These students are picked by faculty, and demonstrate not only academic excellence, but also leadership, integrity and ethics.

Once again, this month’s students gave us so much hope for our future – these are amazing young people! Here is a little information about where they will pursue their college education this fall:

CKHS:
Madison Wallis - Rutgers to pursue NeuroScience
Gabrielle Lazo - UW to pursue Engineering/Bio-engineering
Matyas Kisiday - Stanford
Woon Na – not present

Crosspoint Academy: Meghan Schmidt - UW to pursue Engineering

Klahowya Secondary School:
Kate Schweitzer - USC
Shaela Haga (not present) - UW on an Army ROTC scholarship
