Rotary World Polio Day is Tuesday, October 24, and at 2:30 pm PDT, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will host the World Polio Day broadcast online at .
PDG Brian Beagle was our Club’s first champion of Polio Plus in the late 1980’s when Don Taylor was President, and Brian has been an advocate ever since.  In 1988 there were 350,000 cases of polio per year worldwide when Rotary commenced the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) with WHO, UNICEF, and CDC.  It’s been a gargantuan effort, but “We Are This Close!”
On October 18 Brian gave the Club an update on the current status of the Polio Initiative:
  • Total cases in 2017 to date: 12 in Pakistan and Afghanistan.  None in Nigeria, the third country still not declared polio free.
  • Cost of GPEI 2013-2020: $7 Billion, $6.7B already confirmed or pledged
  • Shortfall:  $300 Million.  That’s why Rotary is still raising funds for Polio Plus
  • Donations to Polio will go towards your Paul Harris account
  • Matching Funds for Rotary donations from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation: 2:1
