Our collective hearts swelled with pride, amazement, and patriotism as Silverdale Rotarians and guests met, heard about, and recognized members of the Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy at our quarterly Military Appreciation luncheon.  These men and women are the local “boots on the ground and boats in the water” to maintain security of our strategic submarines homeported at Naval Base Kitsap Bangor.
The program started with a briefing by CDR Thomas Evans (pictured), Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Maritime Force Protection Unit (MFPU) Bangor.  He described the Unit's four missions: Search and Rescue, Port Waterways Security, Law Enforcement, and Defense Readiness for the eight strategic submarines (SSBN’s) at Bangor, which involves complex security escorts of Coast Guard vessels, each manned with highly trained men and women.
Then we moved on to the awards to our capable and dedicated men and women in uniform:
  • LCpl Thomas E. Floyd III, Marine Corps Security Force Battalion (MCSFBN) Bangor Marine of the Quarter
  • MASN Karson Roache, MCSFBN Blue Jacket Sailor of the Quarter
  • MK3 John Barber, MFPU Kitsap Enlisted Person of the Quarter
  • PS3 Barbara Wierzbicki, Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Kitsap Blue Jacket Sailor of the Quarter
  • HM3 Najii Thomas, NOSC Kitsap Blue Jacket Sailor of the Quarter
Their sponsors (supervisors) described each one’s skills, dedication, and hard work that earned them these prestigious awards.  These young men and women represent the best of our armed forces, and we were honored to meet and recognize them.  Each one received a plaque and a $100 gift card.
Also in attendance (not pictured) were CAPT Douglas Munz (Commanding Officer, NOSC Kitsap); Battalion Sergeant Major Joe Caputo (MCSFBN); Command Master Chief Charles Morrow (NOSC); Senior Chief Ryan Martin, BM1 Orlando Rivera (Sea Scout, MFPU), and family members.
Congratulations and a heartfelt THANK YOU to these members of our Armed Forces and their families who support them!
