Editor’s Note: Thanks to many sources, including several Silverdale Rotarians and several Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue (CKFR) personnel, we can tell this amazing story of Preparedness, Serendipity, Professionalism, and Holiday Miracles!
On Monday, January 8th, CKFR presented two Turkey Trot participants with Citizen Life-Saving Awards to thank them for initiating life saving CPR, seconds after a cardiac event.
Background - On the morning of November 23, 2017, Tom Wilkinson and his family took part in Silverdale Rotary’s Annual Turkey Trot at The Kitsap Mall.  As the participants started the run, Tom ran by Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue  (CKFR) crews who were cheering on participants in the parking lot near Macy’s.  Tom called out to the crews with a smile, “If I go down, will you do CPR on me?”  Battalion Chief Platz responded, “We’ve got you covered!”
Little did crews know that just 5 minutes later they would be alerted by Turkey Trot ham radio volunteers that someone needed help over by Dick’s Sporting Goods.  As firefighters started toward their rig, they were dispatched for CPR in progress. Arriving on scene moments later they found citizens Gretchen Ta and Nathan Sharp performing CPR on Tom; the crews quickly loaded Tom into Medic 51 and continued resuscitation efforts.  Within 8 minutes, Tom had a pulse and was off to Harrison Hospital.
After several weeks in the hospital, Tom was released.  On December 27, the CKFR crew was invited to an open house at the family’s home to celebrate Tom’s miraculous recovery.  See photos below.

Later the Wilkinson family hosted a 2nd reception for Gretchen Ta and Nathan Sharp.  Now Tom and his wife Lil, are back in their Arizona home.
CKFR presented the Citizen’s Life Saving Award to Gretchen Ta and Nathan Sharp at the Board of Commissioner’s meeting on January 8, with five of Tom Wilkinson’s family members attending, as Tom and Lil had already left for Arizona.  See photo below.

Battalion Chief Platz was emphatic that this was one of those situations where every second matters during a cardiac event, and Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue greatly appreciates the immediate actions of the fellow race participants who began CPR.
Silverdale Rotary is also very grateful for the CKFR professionals and volunteers that all came together in seconds to create this Holiday Miracle!
