The Rotary Club of Barbados contributes to Barbados renewable energy and carbon neutral island- state transformational goals.

On January 4th, 2022, the Club handed over the 5kW Photovoltaic System to The School House for Special Needs. The project valued at $25,190.65 was donated and installed by Solar Watt Systems Inc as a gift to the school.

At the project launch ceremony, District Governor Sonya Alleyne noted that the key objective is to eliminate the school’s monthly electricity bill while supporting the environment, one of Rotary International Causes. She underscored the role the project will play in reducing the island’s fossil fuel carbon footprint. She noted ‘the project will definitely not only form a perspective of The Schoolhouse but it helps our own environment here in Barbados as we move towards a carbon footprint-free 2030,”

DG Sonya stated, “The savings that this schoolhouse will garner will be tremendous, and over its life, not this year but in the years to come.”

President of Rotary Club of Barbados Robin Ford remarked “This 5kW PV system will not only provide clean energy to the school but by so doing, reduce the amount of fossil fuel required to be imported into the island and hence reduce our need for foreign exchange spend by our country.”
He also noted that support for the schoolhouse is an ongoing initiative of the Rotary Club of Barbados.

School Principal Yasmin Vlahakis said “The gift comes at a time when we are looking towards a green environment. It would be an ideal time to share with our students in terms of benefits and use of alternative energy,” the principal said.

“It would be important in their science lessons,” Vlahakis added.

Sales and Marketing Representative for Solar Watt Systems Inc Anthony Niles said their company supports the community and very pleased to gift the school with this system.  More importantly he noted that the children will have the opportunity to learn and understand the benefits of renewable energy.  Niles stated that the school can expect to benefit from a reduced electricity bill as early as February 2022.

Rotary Club of Barbados President Robin thanked Solar Watt for their kind donation to The SchoolHouse and for assisting the club in achieving one of its clean energy goals.

He stated, “We empower communities to access grants and other resources, embrace local solutions and spur innovation in an effort to address the causes and reduce the effects of climate change and environmental degradation.”
