Educators and psychologists often tout learning through play as one of the most effective ways to drive the learning process.
But what exactly is learning through play? Learning through play is a term used in education and psychology to describe how a child can learn to make sense of the world around them. Through play children can develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences and environments.
Recently, the Rotary Club of Barbados made a significant contribution to Lite Primary School of a collection of books and outdoor playground equipment, to facilitate learning through play.
In his remarks, President Shawn noted that Rotary Club of Barbados was pleased to support Lite as it catered both to typically developed children as well as those with special needs.
“They are a very deserving school, with great innovative techniques teaching typically developed children and those who may have learning disabilities. It’s a very fantastic concept and one that we fully embrace and that’s why we are doing this presentation. We also have an ongoing partnership with the School House for Special Needs”.
Meanwhile Principal of The Lite Primary School, Billboard Murrell, in accepting the donation pointed out that these materials would enhance their approach of learning through play.
“We do a lot of learning through play. Sometimes children think they are just playing but more often than not they are learning all the while.“
