IN-PERSON & ZOOM MEETING : The Great Retirement Savings Divide
Jan. 20, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Over the last 50 years we have shifted the responsibility for saving and managing retirement assets for retirement from our employers and other large institutions to the individual. This has created huge disparities in retirement readiness, at the same time when we are living much longer.
I am going to point you to some financial calculators that will demonstrate where the divide is going and help you determine your own retirement savings health.
About Marc Miller:
Marc Miller’s career journey included 22 years at IBM, several thriving tech startups, a painful stint as a high school teacher, a gig raising funds for the Jewish Community Association of Austin and a near-fatal bicycle accident that changed his perspective forever. Thirty years of wandering the proverbial career desert, often repeating the same mistakes over and over, taught him his most crucial lesson: Most people don’t really know what makes them happy at their core, what fulfills them. They pursue money, status, a skill set, all of which provide some level of satisfaction, but not contentment. They wind up feeling frustrated and trapped. Others have figured out what they need, but don’t know how to chart a course to get there. An active member of the LaunchPad Job Club, Marc found himself counseling friends and associates on their career journeys and finally realized he’d found his vocation. He would use his extensive training experience to help others—especially Baby Boomers—find careers that they could grow into for the decades that lie ahead. Marc is passionate about his work and the clients he serves. He’s taught in more than 35 countries and helped clients from many industries. Contact him. |

IN-PERSON & ZOOM MEETING : Austin Regional Clinic’s “Population Health” Journey
Mar. 17, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Americans receive extremely good healthcare except when they don’t. At its best, modern medical technology is miraculous but it is delivered through a system that is exceptionally confusing and often very fragmented. The already astronomical cost to the country (approximately $4.2 trillion dollars; $12,500 per person per year) continues to grow at a rate that outstrips inflation year after year. This talk will touch on some of the causes and introduce the concept of Population Health (also referred to as Value Based Care) that is a baby step in attempting to address cost and quality issues.
About Dr. Norman H Chenven, M.D.: Norman H. Chenven, M.D., is a Family Physician and the Founding Chief Executive Officer of Austin Regional Clinic (ARC), a 380 physician multi-specialty medical group that serves the greater Austin metropolitan area with 33 clinical locations. Dr. Chenven developed Covenant Management Systems (CMS) in 1999, a practice management company, third party administrator and management services organization that provides technical support and services to hospitals, medical groups, provider networks and governmental and employer based health plans. He received his undergraduate degree in physics from Brown University, medical degree from the State University of New York Medical Science Center in Brooklyn and post graduate training at Bexar County Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He spent 2 years on a Navajo Reservation as General Medical Officer in Indian Health Service. IN-PERSON & ZOOM MEETING : Refugee Services in Austin
May 05, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Hello all! I wanted to let you all know about an opportunity to support refugees who are being resettled in the Austin area. There are a few of you in this class and some others at Northwest Hills who have asked about the work I have been doing with Refugee Services of Texas and how to help out/get involved. Right now I am working with community engagement that oversees all of the volunteer programming and donations, but has a hand in a little bit of all the programs at RSTX. One of the simplest ways of helping out is through donations either individually or collectively setting up a donation drive. I am planning on reaching out to JJ about putting something in the bulletin on Sundays and seeing if we could start a church-wide donation drive. In this email I'm going to attach the various flyers we have for the different kinds of donations we accept that also have QR codes that you can scan on your phone and send you directly to the amazon/walmart registries. You can simply order something or multiple items off of the registries and the donations are directly sent to RSTX, so you do not even have to leave the house if you are interested in donating in that way. Our main needs right now are diapers, tech, giftcards, and twin mattresses/frames (all of these can be found on the registries except for diapers, which you would buy individually). Please let me know if you have any questions, suggestions, or want to find other ways of possibly getting involved with Refugee Services. Hope you all are doing well, and enjoy the rest of your week.
