President's Message

Matt Miller

Did you know that there is a way to burn 6,000 calories while sitting almost perfectly still?  Play in  a chess tournament.  A Stanford study on tournament chess players showed that they can burn up to 6,000 calories per day.  In two hours of chess, a grand master can burn as many calories as Roger Federer burns in an hour of singles tennis.  All of this  while moving minimally, but using one's brain at its highest levels of performance.

Stress and anxiety cause increased pulse and breathing rates.  These, like aerobic exercise,  cause exhaustion.  Consider all of the additional thought that your day-to-day life has required over the last year.  We've all been hyper-vigilant about potential risks.  We've been constantly avoiding crowds and minding our distance from others.  We think about what we've touched and the last time we sanitized our hands.  We have rearranged our lives around a new reality. It's no wonder we're a bit more clumsy, forgetful, or making silly mistakes.  We're just exhausted.

My niece walked into her kitchen this morning to make breakfast and forgot why she was there.  She is around 30 years old.  I recently made myself a cup of coffee, but forgot to put coffee grounds in the machine.  We may be family, but these strange instances are not indicative of any genetic trait.  They've been happening to everyone I know.  The reason is simply exhaustion.

We're all in this together and we're not quite through it yet.  Remember to be a bit more forgiving to yourself, and to each other.
