Eileen Eby
1000X5 Literacy Program

Eileen’s career was as an elementary school teacher, an elementary school principal and a district literacy instructor. Her early teaching years were in Invermere BC where her three children were born and thrived in the mountain experiences of swimming, hiking, and skiing. In 1990 the family relocated to Victoria and traded skis for ocean activities.

Always passionate about early literacy Eileen believed in the educational system providing rich opportunities for those who had not received them at home. Eileen led teams of teachers in attaining impressive results in Victoria inner city schools. She retired from Victoria School District a few years ago and now travels, enjoys family and works part time in the same area – literacy – that she has always been passionate about.

Eileen now works with an organization called 1000X5 Children’s Book Recycling Project which enriches the experiences of our youngest citizens – those between birth and six. The project is one that contributes to a goal to which all Rotarians commit -   both locally and globally – that of having all our young learners ready to read as they approach their school years.
