End of Polio is in Sight

Photo by Ken LaneOn February 23rd, 2015, Rotarians from Greater Victoria clubs came together to light up the Empress Hotel in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the PolioPlus program.  We are truly making history together.

Since 1985 Rotary and its partners have immunized over 2 billion children and 10 million children have been saved from lifelong paralysis. The global structure created to fight polio has played a significant role with other diseases such as SARS and the more recent Ebola outbreaks.

Only three polio endemic countries remain: Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nigeria has not had a case of wild polio virus since July 2014, paving the way to being polio free in 2015.  Progress is significant but fragile.  Pakistan remains our most challenging area with nearly 90% of the world’s cases of polio in 2014. While there is much still to do, we are truly This Close.  We must stay the course and End Polio Now and Forever.

Don’t forget—every dollar we give to end polio will be matched 2-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $35 million per year through 2018.
