Stories and News

This was our annual spring meeting at the University of New England.

The meeting began with President Ken leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Don Lauzier led the club with our Patriotic Song.  Mark Tuller led us in the 4-Way Test.  And Joe Bassett blessed us with an invocation.

President Ken filled in for PE Bill Kany and VP Lucie Kay to introduce visiting Rotarian Doug Willett from the Saco Bay club.  He also introduced our guests from the UNE Rotaract Club Megan Perry, Ryan Juneau, Jessica Cosplay, Taxia Arabatis, Asst. Director of Foundation and Corporate Giving for UNE Mitchell Brown and Director of Career Services for UNE Mary Jones.  President Ken also announced the names of the scholarship recipients for the 2014-2015 academic year:  Natasha Staples, Kwonduk Jung, and Mahrina Lionetta.

President Ken had the following announcements:
  •  President Ken presented a donation check to UNE in the amount of $3,500.  The Board of Directors for the club approved an increase of $500 in appreciation for UNE hosting our club for a fellowship event in January.
  • President Ken inducted a new member into our club, Ashley Rand from Electricity Maine who is sponsored by Susan Gajewski.  Congratulations and welcome to our club Ashley.
  • Susan Gajewski gave an update on the BINGO fundraiser and urged everyone to sell tickets.  She also explained that sponsorships were still available.
  • The Charitable Giving Committee will hold a meeting immediately following the Rotary Club meeting today.
The 50/50 was won by a Rollie Eon.

There was no Sargent at Arms today as none were present.

President Ken then introduced our speaker, Jeanne Hey, PhD Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at UNE.  She gave a brief background on her upbringing and education.  She then stated that she has a great connection to Rotary and expressed tremendous gratitude as she was a Rotary Youth Exchange student in Columbia when she was 16.  She also spoke to us about the various countries that she has lived in throughout the world.  She taught at Miami University (Ohio) and held leadership positions there before joining UNE in 2011.  Dean Hey impressed upon those in attendance that UNE provides as strong of a Liberal Arts education as the finest in Maine including Bowdoin, Bates and Colby Colleges.  She answered several questions from Rotarians.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:30

This week’s speaker is Sargent Cory Huntress – Saco Police Dept.

Dear Members of the Biddeford-Saco Rotary Club Scholarship Committee – and Invited Guests / Volunteers:
On Monday, May 4, I will be picking up all Scholarship Applications for our 2015 Rotary Club Scholarships, awarded to a Graduating Senior from Biddeford High School, Thornton Academy, Old Orchard Beach High School and the Regional Center of Technology.    That means it is time for us to do our enjoyable work of reviewing the Applications to select the Students who will receive our $1,000.00 per Year Scholarships !
Please MARK YOUR CALENDARS  to attend our two important Meetings on :    TUESDAY, MAY  5, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. at my new Law Office at 374 Main Street, Saco; AND
on :     THURSDAY,  MAY 7, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. also at my Office.  It is also the Offices of my Landlord’s, Jim Audiffred, Esq. and Dana Lane, C.P.A., located directly across Main Street from Dyer Library.  Come in our driveway.  Plenty of parking in the rear.
We start on time and, depending upon the number of Applications, we are done each day by 5:00 or 5:30 p.m.  The more of us who participate, the faster our work goes, so please make every effort to attend BOTH Meetings !
Because we review two High Schools on each day, if you cannot make it for 3:00 p.m., please come for 4:00 p.m. on that day to review the second High School Applications.  The same principle applies if you cannot make one of the two days at all.  Please make every effort to come for the other of the two days for the other two High Schools.
For the rewarding Personal Interviews of the three (3) Finalists from each High School, please mark your Calendars for the following week to meet on:
WEDNESDAY,  MAY 13 , 2015 at 3:00 P.M. at the Biddeford Branch of Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution at Biddeford Crossing Shopping Center, Rt. 111 (Alfred Road).   Please do not park directly in front of the Bank Entrance because those limited Parking Spaces are needed for the Bank’s Customers; AND
on:  THURSDAY, MAY 14, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. also at S&B Savings Institution at Biddeford Crossing Shopping Center.   Again, because we interview the Students from one High School for each Hour, if you cannot make a 3:00 p.m. time, please be there for 4:00 p.m. to interview the three Students from the second High School.
This is an important reason why we work hard throughout the Rotary Year, raising funds !  We provide important Scholarships to the Outstanding Students from the four (4) High Schools we support !   I look forward to seeing each of you on next Tuesday, May 5 at 3:00 p.m. at 374 Main Street, Saco !
                                                                              Yours in Rotary,
                                                                               Alan
