Recovery Initiative Conference 2022 a Huge Success

More than 120 people attended the Rotary Conference workshop in Eliot for the Rotary District 7780 event. Kennebunk Police Chief, and District Governor Nominee, Robert MacKenzie welcomed the group and thanked everyone for being part of the 2022 Building Recovery Ready Communities event. Keynote speaker was Bradford Paige, CEO of Kennebunk Savings Bank.

The audience also had the pleasure of hearing powerful testimony from four brave souls who spoke candidly about their journey to addiction and their path to recovery. Needless to say, it was powerful and left many in the crowd teary eyed.

Thank you to Bill Paterson who serves on this district committee, for your work on this event. Attending from our Club were: Marty, Cheri, and Brenda.

Drug abuse is often accompanied by a devastating social impact upon community life and on the adverse effect on industry, education and training and the family, as well as on its contribution to violence, crime, financial problems, housing problems, homelessness and vagrancy.

Please let Bill Paterson ( wlpaterson08@gmail.com ) know if you would like to learn more about this program or similar programs in our area. To learn more about the Red Ribbon Committee email Jim Godbout. ( jim@jimgodbout.com )

Thank you Roland Gagne, Chair of the International Committee for an update what you and your team are undertaking this year. Rotarians Jen Fullmer, Paulette Bonneau, Melissa Cilley and new to the committee, Deanne Robertson, are working towards supporting the following projects this year:
  1. Armenian Solar Project with two hospitals.
  2. Ugandan Water Project serving a school, medical clinic and trading center.
  3. Jordanian Gift of Life Project supporting cardiac surgeries for children under 5.
  4. Kenyan Rescue Center and School project supporting orphans and vulnerable children.
Please note the photo in this article, is a thank you sign posted by community leaders for a well project in the Ragax Community in eastern Africa (Kenya). This was one of three wells built in that region.

The three wells were donated by our club in 2005 with assistance from the Rotary Club of Kisumu.

NEW PROJECT
Open World 2023

The program allows American leaders and their counterparts from the following participating countries to engage in meaningful and unfiltered dialogue: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Counterparts engage constructively with one another in a manner that complements the U.S. Congress’s legislative diplomacy efforts on timely issues such as e-governance, young leadership development, entrepreneurship, health and social services delivery, education, environment, and the rule of law. The principles of accountability, transparency, and citizen involvement in government are among the concepts emphasized by the Open World program. The program also emphasizes the importance and impact of the legislative process on every aspect of society. Collaboration with foreign legislatures, governments and emerging leaders is a part of Congress’ Article 1 foreign policy oversight function and its conduct of legislative diplomacy.

Overall, the Open World program focuses on developing an international leadership network through which professional counterparts with mutual interests are able to consult and cooperate with each other on issues affecting their communities.

Please stay tuned for more information regarding requirements and eligibility opportunities for our club.
