We had a wonderful meeting last Friday with George O’Brien, editor and principle writer for BusinessWest, our regions premier business publication. George talked about print diversification, some effects of the MGM Casino and the proposed East/West rail line. This was not George’s first time visiting our club and we hope he makes it a habit.
This Friday our speaker will be Hypnotherapist, Dr. Thomas D. Pirnie D.C.H. Hypnosis is an expanding field being used to help people in many areas. Including, but not limited to stop smoking, weight loss, anxiety and sleep issues. The title of his topic is “DON'T LOOK INTO MY EYES, YOU'LL GET HYPNOTIZED”. Sounds like a fun and informative topic! Our club’s Paul Harris/Community Grants Awards Dinner is next Tuesday, June 18th at LaQuinta Inn in Springfield from 5:15p.m-8:00 p.m. Tickets are $40 and can be ordered online or at this Friday’s meeting. Our club will be awarding a Paul Harris Award to Rotarian Mike Tarby and his partner Bob Pelzek at PIP Printing for their contribution to our club throughout the years. Congratulations Mike and Bob! We are also giving away $10,000 in grants to eight area non-profits that evening. Please join us in honoring Mike, Bob and our community. It will be a fun night of fellowship and camaraderie. Our club’s Paul Harris/Service Grants Awards Dinner is Tuesday, June 18that LaQuinta Inn, 100 Congress St in Springfield from5:15p.m-8:00 p.m. Attendees will enjoy four different passed hor d’ouvres, dinner with two entrée choices plus sides and assorted desserts. The event will also feature a cash bar. Tickets are $40 and can be ordered online or at a Friday meeting.

The 2019 grant recipients are Springfield Boys and Girls Club, The Gray House, Inc., Gardening the Community, Friends of the Homeless, Springfield Neighborhood Housing Services, Boys and Girls Club Family Center, Holy Cross Church/ Sandwiches for the homeless and Make-It-Springfield. A total of $10,000 will be awarded this year to these eight great local groups, thanks to the efforts of our Club members.

Today is National Flag Day! Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which took place on June 14, 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson made a proclamation establishing June 14th as Flag Day. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress, which was signed by Harry Truman. Flag Day is celebrated by flying flags and going to parades. The president’s proclamation traditionally says that flags should be flown all week. There are parades all over the United States. Some of the longest running parades are in Appleton, Wisconsin; Fairfield, Washington; and Quincy, Massachusetts!

Dene Kimball could use a little help with displaying our Rotary flags at meetings (as Richard Fulkerson is doing in the attached photo). Dene is planning some extended vacation time soon and would like a few Rotarians to volunteer and put up the flags while he’s away (or give him a break now and then). The flags are stored at Max’s and only take a few minutes to put up or take down. Please talk to Dene about helping out. And thank you for your participation in helping to display our flags!
