The Rotary Club of Sooke donated a composter to Ecole Poirier today, with a rousing dedication by member Alex Nagy.

This initiative has been spearheaded by the DC Team at Poirier (Destination Conservation). These 12 children, and their teacher sponsors, spend their own time to improve our environment.  The composting program has been a big success at Ecole Poirier.  Last year, a composter was brought in to handle the organic waste from kid's lunches.  This program aims to turn what would otherwise be garbage into composted soil for the school's gardens.  This takes something that previously cost money to remove and instead converts it into a valuable resource.  This helps emphasize the importance of ecological issues and sustainability in a real, tangible way for the kids, and gives them a sense of satisfaction in doing something good for the environment and for their school.  However, the program was a victim of its own success, quickly filling the composter to capacity, and the organic waste back into the dumpsters.

By providing another composter, Sooke Rotary is happy to support this very positive initiative of a group of exemplary Sooke citizens.

Sooke Rotary is always looking for opportunities to support local community projects.  Our Club thrives and survives through the generosity of the local community, and our service is aimed right back at the community -- it is Sooke's residents helping each other to make our community stronger, happier, friendlier, healthier, and safer.
