Last Thursday the assembled members of the Rotary Club of Amherst had the great pleasure of listening to Derek Kellogg talk about basketball!  He said that after being head coach here for six years, UMass basketball was back to the very high level of play which he had experienced at when he had been a team member here.

He stressed that very good teams now want to play UMass.  As a result the schedule this year is very, very tough indeed.  Nevertheless, he was quite confident that his team will acquit itself exceptionally well.

Coach said that the realized that fans tend to get nervous when they see the very top players graduating, so they worry about whether the team will continue to be dominant on the court.  He said that recruiting was going very well, so that depth on the bench is such now that for every top player graduating, there is one, sometimes two more than ready to step into the sneakers of a graduating player. What has been a great team will just get better each year!

However, in his mind basketball is not just about winning games.  He wants great teams that are made up of great young men.  His expects that every play will graduate, will participate in community service  … and his teams do just that.

So everyone is invited to come out for the games … they will be exciting.  And it will be a real treat to see really fine young men playing great basketball.  Go UMass!!!!
