Thomas Quentin Benson
January 09, 1943 - March 21, 2021

It is with deep sadness that we announce that Thomas Quentin Benson, 78, of Littleton, CO, passed away on March 21, 2021 in Littleton, Colorado.

Tom was born to Helen Winzenburg Benson and Dr. Theodore Quentin Benson on January 9th, 1943 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He attended St. Mary’s High School before graduating from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, 1964. It was there that Tom developed a deep, lifelong love for Notre Dame. Following graduation, he started law school at the University of North Dakota before graduating with a Juris Doctor from the University of Denver, in Denver, Colorado. Tom took great pride in practicing law and was a founding partner of Benson and Case, serving the Denver community for over 47 years.

In August 1968 Tom and Mary Mangelsorf began their life together as husband and wife for 52 years. Tom was highly involved in the education and activities of their three children, Annemarie, Tom, and Mark. He was an avid fan of the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies and was always proud to call Denver home.

Tom also dedicated his time and talent to volunteer service organizations. Over the years he participated in and was the president of the Notre Dame Club of Denver, University Hills Rotary Club, Catholic Lawyers Guild of Colorado, as well as the USA Council of Serra International, a Catholic organization to promote and support vocations for the Catholic priesthood. As a part of the Notre Dame Club of Denver, he was recognized for his service and dedication to the Club when it bestowed on Tom the Club’s highest honor, the “Award of the Year”, in 1988. Furthermore, Tom rose to the rank of Captain after 27 years in the Navy Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG Corps) Reserves.

At the ripe age of 59, after being an avid 10K runner for many years, Tom decided to kick it up a few notches and began running marathons. The challenge of running 26.2 miles, along with the idea of traveling around the country inspired him and took hold as his new hobby. Accompanied by his “travel support crew” (Mary and one of his kids for each trip). Tom ran marathons in Chicago, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, San Diego, New York and Phoenix. When it was all said and done, Tom completed 11 full and a handful of half marathons in all. He continued to run until the age of 74.

Tom is survived by his wife, Mary Benson of Littleton, CO, his sisters Eleanor Knudson of Mandan, North Dakota, Barbara McMullen of Columbus, Indiana, and his children, Annemarie Dempsey of Centennial, CO, Tom Benson II of Lakeville, MN and Mark Benson of Denver, CO, and his 9 grandchildren (Samuel, Henry & Hannah Dempsey of Centennial, CO, Luke, Lily, Sophia & Lauren Benson of Lakeville, MN, and Michael & Carmen Benson of Denver, CO).
