The Rotary Club of University Hills recently released funds to the Santa Tecla Rotary Club in El Salvador.  This project was spearheaded by our recent Rotarian of The Year Ricardo Cardenas.  The project provides funds for a new library at the Barra Salada school in El Salvador.  The k-6th grade school has approximately 100 students serving an impoverished neighborhood.  The $6000 in funds included a matching grant from the district provided:
  • $1,000 Computer Equipment
  • $2,000 Books
  • $2,000 Shelves, desks chairs and white board
  • $1,000 Finishing of the building

BARRA SALADA SCHOOL:
The school is in the Province of Sonsonate, 60 miles SW of the capital city of El Salvador. Even though this is a very poor school, it has been improving during the last years, thanks in part to the Solidary Hearts Foundation, who is their main beneficiary.
The most recent improvement has been the opening of an IT classroom, which was made possible with the donation of 20 laptops and 60 desks.
The school has approximately 100 students from kindergarten to 6th grade.
THE PROPOSED PROJECT:
Equipping of the school library.
* Estimated budget is $6,000
* Dimensions would be 12 X 12 feet.
* These people and entities have already committed to help towards the $6,000:
$500 Santa Tecla Rotary Club
$250 Solidary Hearts Foundation
$250 Cardenas Family
------
$1,000 Total already committed
The total of $6,000 would be allocated as follows:
$1,000 Computer equipment
$2,000 Books
$2,000 Shelves, desks, chairs, white board
$1,000 Finishing of the building
------
$6,000 Total of the project
SOLIDARY HEARTS FOUNDATION:
Was created 6 year ago by the Gonzalez family, after the miraculous recovery of our goddaughter, Sofia, who is now a cancer survivor; with a Shelby Davis scholarship, she is going to school at Saint Olaf in Minnesota. Solidary Hearts serves 1,000 free meals per
week to parents of children hospitalized in various facilities. They have 30 local volunteers and have hosted 5 volunteers from the US China, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.
SANTA TECLA ROTARY CLUB:
The Santa Tecla Rotary Club has 18 Members and was founded in 1972. I personally know several Members, and I consider this “my second Rotary Club.” Two Members of this club, along with their spouses, will attend the Rotary International Convention in Hawaii, so this will be a great opportunity to meet them in person.

FOLLOW-UP VISIT:
A follow-up visit of various Members of University Hills would be very beneficial. During this trip, we would:
* Visit the Barra Salada School. Library inauguration ceremony, cutting of the ribbon, and blessing by a Priest. Also, beach lunch with the School Principal.
* Meet with the Santa Tecla Rotary Club. They have invited us to a celebration dinner at the house of one of the Members.
* Enjoy a few days at the beach! There are several Airbnb places where we could stay:
Casa Punta
Casa Alta
Casa Tamanique
IS IT SAFE TO TRAVEL TO EL SALVADOR?
Even though nowadays it is impossible to guarantee safety anywhere in the world, I need to say that I travel to El Salvador several times per year and have never had any problems. Several of our American friends have volunteered in El Salvador in the past, and they have always had a good experience.
Solidary Hearts recently hosted Krystina, a volunteer from Sweden, who taught English lessons at the Barra Salada School, and she had a great experience. Watch her testimonial here.
