Better than watching Punxsautawney Phil on Groundhog Day, Evergreenites identify with the sinking of the barrel as a sign that spring is just around the corner.

Members of the Mountain Foothills Rotary placed the Evergreen Ice Melt Contest barrel on Evergreen Lake January 2 to officially begin the 7th annual competition to see who would guess the correct date and time when the barrel would fall into the water.

“We want to thank the mountain community for participating in this year’s contest and showing their support for our primary beneficiaries – the special needs program of the Evergreen Park & Recreation District and Evergreen Christian Outreach,” said Nancy Grant, the Ice Melt Chairperson at Mountain Foothills Rotary. “We’ve had a lot of fun speculating over the last few weeks as to when the barrel will drop. The real joy of this event, however, is that knowing that through ticket sales and the generosity of our sponsors we have raised more than $15,000 for two outstanding local causes.”

The event has been supported by local sponsors.

The premium sponsor for this year’s contest was Willow Creek restaurant.
