A Message from Roger and Virginia

As the Colorado spring begins to show itself, we find ourselves thinking about the concept of renewal. In Rotary, renewal isn't just about the changing seasons; it’s about the fresh perspectives our new members bring and the energy we feel after an inspiring Tuesday program.

Our weekly lunch is our "charging station." The ideas sparked over salad and coffee are what eventually become the projects that change lives. We encourage you to invite a friend to our lunchtime meeting and share the "buzz" that makes this club so special. We are particularly excited about the evolving plans for our Epic Day of Service on May 16, where we will dedicate a new Peace Pole—a true demonstration of "Service Above Self."

New Member Welcome: We are thrilled to officially welcome William Aultman to the Longmont Rotary family! Please make a point to introduce yourself to William at an upcoming meeting.

Yours in Rotary Service, Roger and Virginia

❤️ Family of Rotary

In Memoriam: John Flanders

Family of Rotary: In Remembrance

John Flanders | June 22, 1945 – April 4, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Flanders, who recently concluded a valiant health battle. John was the embodiment of "Old Longmont Rotary" and a bridge to our future. The grandson of charter member Gray Secor, John was an elite CU athlete and Stanford Law graduate who returned home to serve his community with distinction.

From his leadership on the Longmont Hospital Board to his instrumental role in establishing the Hover Senior Living Community, John’s legacy of "law honestly applied" and community service is woven into the fabric of Longmont. He will be deeply missed.

👤 In The Spotlight: CLAY DOUGLAS

Getting to know the person behind the badge.

  • The "Rotary Moment": Bell-ringing for the Salvation Army. "Seeing the goodwill a simple project could generate made me think, 'Yeah, this is exactly why I’m a Rotarian.'"

  • The Four-Way Test: Clay applies the Test to daily life by striving for truth and fairness in every decision.

  • Passion Project: Clay wants to bring back the tradition of posting regular meeting invitations in the Longmont Times-Call to grow our fellowship.

  • The Dream Dinner: Grilling for his three grown children and six grandchildren. The big question: "What should I cook, and who is helping clean up?"

  • The Longmont Must-Do: A hike at Button Rock Preserve to see the 210-foot dam. “It’s a local treasure for scenery and the heart of our water supply.”

⚙️ The Engine Room: Committee Updates

By Andrew Lee and Charlotte Tyson | Turning Rotary donations into local and global impact.

  • 1. Botswana HippoRollers | Grant Closed: The District has officially approved our final report, clearing the way for new impactful projects in the region.

  • Watch the Hippo Roller Video: Simple Innovation, Massive Impact

  • 2. IntegratingPRO | Robotic Occupational Therapy in Ukraine: The committee has approved a $2,500 grant toward the IntegratingPRO system. This cutting-edge robotic technology will be integrated into a comprehensive medical rehab program in Ukraine, providing patients with advanced tools to regain mobility.

  • 3. Growing Gardens | Expanding our Roots: Our partnership continues to flourish. We are identifying upcoming service projects where Rotarians can get their hands in the dirt to support local food security. The next phase is expected to increase local produce output by over 30%.

  • 4. Longmont Flag Competition: Longmont Rotary is officially partnering with the City of Longmont and will serve on the judging panel to help select the winner of the city-wide flag design contest.

  • 5. Colorado Recidivism Project | Breakthrough Results: Longmont Rotary has joined Boulder and several Denver-area clubs in underwriting a project that provides specialized training prior to release. The program has successfully reduced the rate of recidivism by more than 60% in its first year.

  • 6. Native American Technology Training | Window Rock, AZ: In a unique "Reverse Global Grant" sponsored by an Irish Rotary District, we are training 30 Navajo High School students in software and networking skills, allowing them to secure high-tech internships without leaving the reservation.

  • 7. Dolly Parton Imagination Library – District 5450 Matching Grant The partnership of Longmont Rotary, Born to Read, and the Longmont Community Foundation launched the Dolly Parton Imagination Library project in Longmont on May 1, 2025.  This program, which provides free age-appropriate books for children from birth to age 5, mailed directly to their home each month, was kicked off with a $6,000 grant from the Longmont Rotary Charity Fund and district match.   Currently there are 760 active children plus 61 graduates, for a total of 821 children served.
