Dr. Carol Enright presented a fascinating glimpse into the life of Mr. Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary. It all began with the vision of this remarkable man. Born in 1868 in Racine, Wisconsin, Paul Harris moved to Vermont at the age of three to live with his paternal grandparents. In his own words, "I was to have the benefit of a well-regulated, permanent home where nothing was over or underdone; where ideals were of the highest and education the supreme objective."
Paul attended three different universities before finally earning his law degree. Though not an exceptional student, he had a genuine interest in people and cultivating new friendships. After graduation, Paul embarked on an audacious adventure, traveling the world for five years. With a willingness to tackle any kind of work, be it mental or physical, Paul dedicated himself wholeheartedly to work and service. He also took pride in his appearance. During his travels, Paul explored various parts of Europe, England, and the United States. He even had the opportunity to visit the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. Along the way, he worked as a reporter for the Rocky Mountain News in Colorado and even tried his hand as a cowboy on a ranch in Platteville.
In 1896, Harris settled in Chicago and established his own law practice. Inspired by the camaraderie he witnessed among business owners and shopkeepers in Chicago's north side, Paul sought companionship with other professionals. It was on February 23, 1905, that Paul Harris and three fellow business associates held what is now considered the inaugural Rotary meeting. They decided to rotate their meeting locations, hence the name Rotary. At that time, the streets of Chicago were often dirty, with feces frequently seen on the ground. Remarkably, their first project involved the construction of a toilet.
The first decade of Rotary witnessed significant growth and progress. In 1908, the first Rotary Club in San Francisco was established. By 1911, the motto "He profits most who serves best" was adopted, and in 1912, Rotary clubs began forming in Europe, Ireland, and Canada. The Rotary we know today originated from humble beginnings. It all started with one person's desire to foster friendships and create equitable opportunities for others to succeed and serve their communities. It serves not only as an inspiration but also as a reminder of our own inherent value and what each of us can achieve.

The new Longmont Rotary bylaws will usher in a new leadership style. Starting July 1st, Rose Crispin and Tim Waters will serve as our new Co-Presidents for the next two years. This idea was proposed by our current Club President, Wein, who discovered this successful model through interactions with other Rotary clubs. Implementing this approach in the Longmont Rotary Club not only serves as a recruitment strategy but also offers valuable support to the presidents and encourages innovative thinking. Moreover, the two-year term ensures consistency and stability in planning and executing club goals. We extend our warmest congratulations to Tim and Rose as they lead our club into a thrilling new chapter filled with exciting adventures.
