Medicine Horse staff member, Anna Wells, Development Director, and Dana Schultz, Clinical Liaison (on the right), shared how they harness the healing power of horses to transform lives for the clients they serve.  This non-profit provides equine therapy to underserved youth, the LGBTQ+ community, veterans, service members, those recovering from substance use, cancer patients, and trauma survivors. Founded in 2000, Medicine Horse is a non-profit offering equine-facilitated psychotherapy and learning sessions, free or by donation. Longmont Rotary had the opportunity to hear from three club members who said "yes" to city service.  Leona Stoecker, Roger Lange, and Bryan Baum all served as Mayor in the City of Longmont.  Here are some highlights of their talks:  
 

Leona Stoecker served as mayor for three consecutive terms from 1993-2001. Leona’s accomplishments were many, but she was most proud of being a founding member of the League of Women Voters in Longmont. She was also very committed to the Sister Cities program, and she laughed when she spoke about the city Goose Project, which coined her the name “Mother Goose”.   During her time as mayor, she played a role in securing Agmen's important role in Longmont.  Leona said, "I always looked at myself as a servant of the people".  Her tireless commitment to Longmont holds many accomplishments. The Boulder County Business Report has called her “public servant extraordinaire.”  Leona closed with a reminder of our power and influence, urging her fellow Rotarians to volunteer their service and expertise by serving on community boards. 

 

Before serving as mayor,  Roger Lange worked at Mountain States Telephone and Communications (Ma Bell) as an electrical engineer. "Much of my work was overseas providing wireless networks in Malaysia and India.  "When I retired, I wanted to contribute more, so I served on the Longmont City Council for eight years."  Roger served as Mayor of Longmont from 2007-2009.   “I learned as I went along and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting people." Roger said there were two words essential to his work as mayor- collaboration and listening.  “Being a successful leader takes time and learning from our successes and failures,"  Roger said. One of his best decisions as mayor was the elimination of smoking in public places.  
  
Bryan Baum started his talk by sharing, “Rotary affected the way I did everything in my role as Mayor”. Bryan fondly recalls his time as mayor, remembering the Baum Mobile, which offered an opportunity for citizens to get a hotdog and talk.  Bryan served as Mayor from 2009-2011. One of his greatest accomplishments was the completion of Platte River Power and the implementation of NextLight for the community.  For Bryan, it was about serving the public.  He also started a “Positive Impact Award”, recognizing everyday citizens doing positive things in the community.
