Program:  Transportation for the Future
Diane Crist is a Colorado native who has lived in several countries and has used multiple modes of public transportation as a result. She has had a long-standing interest in improving public transportation, as well as the environment.   The Colorado Department of Transportation forecasts that 1.1 million more people will move to Colorado in the next 30 years while at the same time, the State has also set the goals of reducing emissions by 50% by 2025 and by 90% by 2050. Diane presented information about hyperloop technology as the future for fast, carbon-free transport of passengers and products helping to achieve these goals.  Colorado entered the Hyperloop One Global Challenge and in 2017 was one of 10 winners worldwide and one of four in the US. The initial Colorado proposal was for a hyperloop system starting in Cheyenne through Longmont to DIA and ending in Pueblo.  Since then, the plan has been modified to a 40-mile system for transportation from Ft. Collins to Denver, which would take approximately 7 minutes.

The hyperloop system has two main parts: a tube consisting of tracks and capsules or pods where passengers and cargo are loaded. The pod lifts above the track using magnetic levitation and glides at airline speeds. The technology offers very fast speed of transportation, has very low power consumption, and is carbon-free.

The initial cost of investment to have the system in place is very high but is to be provided through private funding. As a result, the timeline for building this system is unclear.

Hello All,

Thank you for granting me the opportunity to serve as the president of the Rotary club of Longmont for the 2021–2022 Rotary year.

The upcoming year will be one of continuing change as we start the process of returning to the “new normal“ of in-person meetings. The process is going to be a "crawl, walk, run" and I hope everyone will be patient.
The theme of this rotary year is "Serve to change lives".  It will be wonderful to be able to come up with projects to follow this theme and continue to serve our community locally nationally and internationally.
While we will not be able to have in person RYLA again this year, there will be a one day virtual session. With school being in person, I am looking forward to the Young Rotarian‘s being able to start up again in the fall. Our youth are the future of rotary!
My goal this year is to grow our club by a few members and for everyone to think of younger people in the community who would make great Rotarians.
I look forward to a terrific year.
Yours in Rotary,
Debby Paris
