World Polio Day was on October 24th, and we had the great opportunity to hear from Dave Willman, District 5450 Foundation Chair. He spoke about the current status of polio on our planet and our efforts to end this devastating disease, which afflicts children, causing crippling conditions and sometimes death. Rotary has been an active partner in fighting this disease since 1978 and has, to date, protected 3 billion children against polio, reducing polio cases by 99.9%. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect children against this paralyzing disease. Polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan; however, the number of affected children is very low. To achieve 'planetary eradication,' much analysis and a required waiting period are necessary before we can truly celebrate. Rotary will remain committed to the finish line as we work to educate, raise funds, and support the efforts of those workers still on the front line vaccinating children."
The 32nd Annual Longmont Rotary Winter Warmth Coat Drive is now in full swing, with club members signed up to collect coats at the 18 community collection sites. This six week drive will continue through November 25th, collecting hats, mittens, blankets and of course coats. These winter warmth items go to The OUR Center where we host a kick-off Distribution event on December 2nd. To see a full list of the collection sites, go to longmontrotary.org
Plan to attend our Veteran's Day celebration on Tuesday, November 7th. Bring a guest, enjoy lunch and our program as we recognize all branches of the military honoring those who serve our country. We will also be recognizing our Vietnam era Veterans (11/1/55 -to- 5/15/75) with a small gift of appreciation.
The Rotary Marketplace is in full swing. We have received donations from Rotarians and local businesses, items worthy of purchase by the highest donation offer. Last week our highest donation offer was $100.00 for these four MoPar Beer mugs (see picture), compliments of Prestige Dodge. All proceeds go to benefit Club Development efforts.
John Caldwell is offering the donation of the monthly fee if someone needs to store a car or trailer. Please discuss with John your questions on this item. (This garage space is not for the storage of boxes, etc).
Mark your calendars for November 15th, 5:30pm at the home of Leigh Flanagin. This is a potluck event with the club providing the libations. We will send out the address through email closer to the event.
