Weather Modifications/Cloud Seeding
Aug. 22, 2023
In 1970, Wolfram graduated from University of Colorado, Boulder, with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. His first job was with Sierra Research Corporation, a Boulder based weather modification company, as a radar station manager in Libya for their winter cloud seeding operations. In the summer, he was occupied with managing a weather station in Bettles, Alaska, in support of wild fire abatement using cloud seeding. Late in 1973, he landed a perfect job in Washington DC with the Naval Research Laboratory as a field engineer. He quickly adapted his skills to develop, install and operate airborne weather data gathering instrumentation on the Navy twin engine research aircraft. He developed sophisticated software to analyze weather data gathered during expeditions from Point Barrow in the Arctic to McMurdo in the Antarctic; from Nova Scotia, Canada to Cocoa Beach, Florida. His most memorable expedition was to Cape Canaveral in support of the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz mission. In 1982, with a job offer from Ball Aerospace in Broomfield, Wolfram came back to Colorado as test engineer for Space Shuttle star trackers. Using Computer Aided Design (CAD), he helped build the Hubble Space Telescope's silicone imaging chip and was instrumental in the success of other space hardware launched into space. In 1993, he developed the K-Panel, a Concrete Structural Insulated Panel (CSIP), which he used in one of his real estate construction projects in Longmont and plans to incorporate it into the expansion of his commercial storage facility in Frederick. |
