In traditional Rotary fashion, our club rose to the occasion for another successful project. Our members collected used-handbags last year for non-profit organization, Dress for Success.
Last month our service projects committee chair, Kathy, headed up a used-handbag drive with the proceeds benefitting the organization Dress for Success Denver.
Dress for Success (DFS) was founded in 2006 in order to – in their own words – “provide at-risk women with job readiness tools, professional attire, and post-employment support to assist them in their efforts to achieve economic self-sufficiency.”
DFS programs offer professional suiting, career center coaching, the Going Places Network (job readiness), pathways to education, and the Professional Women’s Group (job retention).
Kathy presented to our club an opportunity to support one of DFS’ many programs: professional attire. If a woman does not have a job, then she most likely cannot afford career-oriented items. DFS was lacking specifically in women’s handbags, so Kathy decided to focus on that.
Well, our club had no shortage of used handbags. In the mere month and a half that we had to collect used, interview-ready handbags, our club collected 97. On top of that, we were able to collect many accessories, shoes/boots, and clothes.
Dress for Success is a great organization and as great organizations do, they are growing. Quickly. DFS could use your help collecting:
  • Financial Donations
  • Sponsorship
  • Volunteers
  • Donations
  • Beneficiaries
We all have the opportunity. The opportunity to let go of old bags, clothes, shoes, and accessories that collect dust in our closets and basements. Give them a new life and find a way to get involved with Dress for Success. Our club plans to continue raising handbags every year.
