Carolyne Jordan Champion for Youth Exchange

I joined Rotary for business, I stay with Rotary to give back to the world and promote peace through friendships. In addition to being a champion for Rotary Youth Exchange, Rotary has allowed me to meet so many people who would not have crossed my life path without it.  Rotary has provided opportunities for personal leadership growth and plenty of feel-good moments when giving back. I love the hometown feel of my club and the global reach of the organization.

Do you hear what I hear?

The Wilson High School Interact Club warmed up the hearts of many people living at Country Meadows before the Christmas holiday.  They were able to stand outside the windows of residence and sing to them during a time when many residents were limited visitors.  Their joyous voices brought smiles and happy tears to the residents.  Click to see photos.

Today's Meeting - a Recap

Posted by Marlee Watts on Feb 25, 2015
Good afternoon fellow Rotarians!
My apologies for not getting a bulletin to you prior to today's meeting. So instead, here is a short recap of the meeting in case you were unable to attend.

We welcomed Terry Reed back from his mission in Uganda. In a few short minutes he captivated us with stories of his experiences. He talked about the people the team is helping now and will continue to help, life in Uganda and Rotary in Uganda. Rotary has a very notable presence with numerous, viable clubs and a strong commitment by it's members! Terry gave our banner to several of the local clubs and brought some back which he presented to our president, Karen DeWalt.

Our guest speaker was Dr. David Bingaman, LSW. Dave is currently the Program Office Supervisor of the Leesport Office of Family Care for Children and Youth, Inc., a state-wide foster child and foster parent agency. The Leesport Office which he supervises services eleven counties in Southeastern Pennsylvania. He shared wonderful information about the foster care program in this area and distributed literature for us to take home. For more information on becoming a foster family go to http://www.fccy.org/

March 11 - New Generations leadership conference. We are looking for 1 or 2 volunteers to help sign up the participants at the start of conference on Wednesday morning, March 11th from 8-9:30 am at Penn State Berks campus. For information, contact Kit Fegley: jkflaw@comcast.net

March 21 - Casino Night to benefit the Rotary Clubs in Berks County. Place: The Crowne Plaza, Wyomissing. Time 5-10 pm. Further information, tickets, sponsorships, go to the "DOWNLOAD FILES" section on our website: http://portal.clubrunner.ca/6818

March 28 - Habitat Berks Restore Drive.  Contact them now to schedule a pick up of large household items that you are unable to deliver yourself. Pickups can be arranged with two weeks notice by e-mailing Tim Kercher at tkercher@habitatberks.org or calling the ReStore at 610-921-1315. - See more at:  http://portal.clubrunner.ca/6818#sthash.Dqb3I4iH.dpuf

Our next meeting is at noon on Thursday, March 5th, at the Wyomissing Family Restaurant. See you there!

Message from Dave Dries:

We are now within one month of the deadline for Rotarians to reserve blocked rooms at the Wyndham at the reduced rate of $139 a night.  The conference is April 23 - April 26 but the group rate deadline is the end of March.

You can also promote your business with ads for the conference program.  If you know Rotarian's who own a business or work for businesses that have supported Rotary in the past, please personally contact them as you see appropriate.  Many times opportunities are missed simply because we fail to ask.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email or call me(610-573-3078).

Thanks for all you do for Rotary and District 7430.

Aaron's Acres Presentation

February 5th Meeting - Don't miss it!

The Rotary Clubs of West Reading/Wyomissing and Conrad Weiser partnered to obtain a Rotary District 7430 Grant to provide scholarships for Aaron’s Acres special needs youth and families to attend a summer camp program in Berks County at the South Mountain YMCA.   The Rotary Club members from West Reading/Wyomissing and Conrad Weiser ran a carnival during the summer camp program with events adapted to the needs of the campers. This provided a special fun day at the camp for the youth and their families.

A check will be presented by both Rotary Clubs on February 5, 2015 at the West Reading Wyomissing Rotary meeting at noon at the Wyomissing Family Restaurant in the amount of $3,250 to Risa Paskoff, Executive Director of Aaron’s Acres.  She stated, “Families raising children with special needs face a tremendous amount of challenges, including financial ones.  By providing scholarships to families, we are eliminating one of the possible stressors they may face. In addition, we are providing a 2 week period of time that is positive for the child as well as for the family. In this way, the mental health of the familial unit is improved. The family feels energized and recharged which results in them being able to face ongoing challenges throughout the year.  Our goal is to provide a 2 week period that is stress free---in all aspects.  Everyone involved with Aaron’s Acres is grateful to have received this grant.”

Karen Dewalt, President of the West Reading/Wyomissing Rotary, said “We partnered with the Conrad Weiser Rotary to write a grant to better serve the needs in our community. By joining together we increased the funding and opportunities for the special needs children supported by Aaron's Acres at South Mountain YMCA Camp”.

Additional information about Aaron’s Acres can be found at: http://aaronsacres.org/. and for the South Mountain YMCA at: http://www.smymca.org/

Luncheon Cost from $15 to $17 Effective February 5, 2015

The Rotary Club of West Reading/Wyomissing Board of Directors managed to keep the cost of our Rotary luncheons to $15 for the last few years.  The $15 covered the cost of each Rotarian’s lunch as well as our Student-of-the Month, parents and school personnel accompanying the students.  Neither a first time guest who is considered a potential new member or our guest speakers pay for lunch.  While we are currently losing money every luncheon meeting the $2 increase to $17 will ensure continuation of our program and tradition of honoring our special guests with their complimentary luncheon.

The Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary, we tap into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money, and expertise into our priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. November gives us the chance to build greater ownership and pride in our Foundation. We have so much to celebrate. The new grant model, Rotary’s website, our publications, and our new branding effort all focus on building a strong message — the importance of contributing to and supporting our Rotary Foundation.

Locally the Rotary Clubs of West Reading and Conrad Weiser used matching Foundation grant money to fund camping opportunities for Aaron's Acres, a program supporting students with special needs.

With our new meeting place comes a new song!

Now that we have a new meeting place we need a new song. Or at least we need some revisions to our old song. So here is the new first stanza:

Meeting West of Schuylkill on a Thursday afternoon,
West Reading-Wyomissing Club greets you with a tune.
To make you feel at home, we sing this song for you,
To our friends at Rotary loyal strong and true.

The second stanza remains the same

We love to sing for funs of things, so join the sweet refrain.
If you enjoy our fellowship, we know you'll come again.
Rotarians together, the best beneath the moon,
Meeting West of Schuylkill on a Thursday afternoon.

Club President Jeremiah Sensenig has announced that Thursday, April 10th marked the end of our tenure at Toscani Grille.

Beginning April 24 our new meeting place will be The Wyomissing Family Restaurant. You may be asking yourself, "What about April 17th?" That's a great question. Jennifer Quick has graciously offered to host us at The Courtyard by Marriott for one meeting. The Courtyard by Marriott is located behind Viva.

"We reviewed several options, and found that Wyomissing Family Restaurant is the best fit for our needs," Jeremiah said. He also said that if you ad any questions you could email him or any board member.
