Meet Jim Oehlert

I got to sit and chat with Jim Oehlert, and his lovely bride, Beverly at their beautiful home in Limerick.  We sat outside, under the gazebo overlooking a "Jim" built Koi pond with about 100 fish of various shapes and sizes in it...This couple is the stuff dreams are made of.....They complete each other's sentences and smile at each other....They are truly in love after 59 years!  But, let's start at the beginning...James Oehlert "Jim" was born and raised in Limerick Township with one brother and one sister....Mom and Dad were of German decent...His Dad started Oehlert Brothers Oil Company and their first delivery was 12/24/48!

Member Spotlight - Vince Raffeo

Let me introduce my new friend, Vince Raffeo….
Vincenzo Raffeo was born to immigrants from Sicily, Italy…they came to America through Philadelphia and settled in Norristown on 759 Sandy Street….Vince was the youngest of eleven kids, six boys and five girls!  In those days, there was a midwife who delivered the babies….and that midwife would get the birth paperwork to the Catholic Church….thereby, setting the baby’s birth date.  It might not have been the true birth date, but, possibly months after!   Now, Vince happens to be the only remaining family member left!   His Mother, Lena, was a guiding force in young Vince’s life….he thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world, with red hair and green eyes.  His love for his Mother grew into the loving traits he instills to this day in helping women in business and the community…But, tragically, at the age of 53, Lena passed away from leukemia when Vince was 10 years old.

Member Spotlight - Gene Krasley

I met with Gene Krasley at his home in Limerick Township....I could not help but notice the collection of Hess Trucks!   Gene is an avid collector, although he assured me that he is "downsizing" his collection and that now he only has his favorites....Gene was born and raised in beautiful, downtown Royersford!   He had one sister, Mary and three brothers, Art, Bud and Jack, all of which are deceased,...leaving a very empty space in Gene's life.  I came to find out, during our conversation that Gene holds his family in the highest regard.

Member Spotlight - Ed Nugent

Ed Nugent agreed to sit down with me this past week, and I could not have enjoyed our meeting more....Let me tell you about Ed.......Ed was born and raised in Elizabeth, NJ in 1929 in an Irish and German household, as a middle child with two sisters.   In first grade, he met his future wife, a young Irish girl named Ann Celeste....they grew up in the same community and went to the same church.  As a young man, Ed enlisted in the military with four of his hometown buddies.  He served in the 25th Division, the 27th infantry regiment.  His company was relieving troops coming out of the Philippines during the Japanese occupation in WWII.  Ed came out of the service and attended Seton Hall College on the GI bill.  At one point, Ed and his friends threw a party in a local hall to celebrate coming back from the War, and guess who was in a corner....Ann Celeste...Ed and Ann got together and married at 22!

Words from President Dan White

Posted by Daniel White
Hello Rotarians and Friends,

This is the final bulletin I'll be sending during my year as President. It was not the year any of us expected, but I am greatly appreciative for everyone who helped keep our club running and active while we dealt with frequent changes and restrictions. I am looking forward to the coming year with David Akers as our incoming President. I know that all of you will continue to help us work our way back to "normal" meetings and on track to become a growing, vibrant club once again.

As for our meeting this Wednesday, June 23rd, a reminder that we will be holding our meeting at the Upper Providence Community Center located in Anderson Farm Park (499 Hopwood Rd, Collegeville). We'll start at our normal meeting time of 12:10PM and we'll be getting a tour of the facility from Sue Hoffman, Director of Parks & Rec. Please remember to bring your own lunch! Also, this will be an in-person meeting only.

Tomorrow is also the last day to return Duck Race tickets at our meeting. Please hand them in to either Barry Shafer or David Akers. This is a great fundraiser for our club and we will receive money back from ticket sales which we pass on to the charity of our choosing!

We are also starting to plan for Community Days for Limerick, Royersford, and Upper Providence which happen in the August/September time frame. We need volunteers who are able to help out on either Aug 14th (Limerick) or Sept 11th (Royersford & Upper Providence). Please reach out if you're available!

Barry Shafer has set up our evening event at the Reading Fightin' Phils baseball game for August 19th. Tickets are for the picnic area and come with food/soda. Fireworks are happening after the game and I believe there is already a group of 20+ committed to going. Please contact Barry soon if you want to reserve tickets.

Tickets are on sale for the Limerick Uncorked Festival on October 2nd and we have received a very positive response so far. Tickets can be purchased here: Purchase Tickets - Limerick Uncorked | Limerick PA

(A final thank you to all of you who read this bulletin from top-to-bottom every time!)

Rotary International Vision Statement
Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change - across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Be well,

Interact Club

Some of you may not be aware of the Spring-Ford High School Interact Club and the affiliation with our Rotary Club. The Spring-Ford club has over 100 members and is headed by faculty members Melanie Bowen and Julie Quinby. The students are involved in several events each year and contribute to our events and fundraising goals. Each spring we host a dinner to thank the Interact students for their contributions and to meet the new officers for the club. Students and their parents attend this event.

Our annual Interact dinner will be this Wednesday, May 15 at 6:30pm at the Spring-Ford Country Club. Please plan to join us for this nice event.

Here is some information from the Rotary website:

Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting.

Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of - Developing leadership skills and personal integrity - Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others - Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work - Advancing international understanding and goodwill.

As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than 10,700 clubs in 109 countries and geographical areas, Interact has become a worldwide phenomenon. Almost 200,000 young people are involved in Interact.

Our annual changeover dinner was held this year at the Spring Hollow Golf Club in Spring City on Wednesday, July 11, 2012. Barry Shafer did a great job of putting all of the details of the dinner together for us. Tom Spann gave us a run down of all of the things we accomplished this year. Gene Krasley swore in our new President, Barry Shafer. Barry presented Tom Spann with a past presidents plaque and pin. Barry then chatted about some of his ideas for the upcoming year. He handed out the new committee list. Everyone was super excited to see what committee's they will be serving on.  Barry then invited everyone to his home to continue the celebration.  Some people celebrated a little bit too late.  Thanks Tom for a great year. Barry good luck in the upcoming year.

SF Rotary's Pancake Breakfast Raises $7,000.

Posted by Thomas Smith on Apr 24, 2012

At the regular weekly meeting of the Spring-Ford Rotary Club, the proceeds from the 34th Annual Pancake Breakfast totaling $7,000 were donated to the following community organizations: Spring-Ford High School Baseball, Spring City Pool, Spring Valley YMCA, Spring-Ford Historical Society, Project Outreach, Spring-Ford Youth Athletic League (SFYAL), Limerick Historical Society, Royersford Public Library, Spring City Library, and Open Door. The listed organizations supported our efforts by working at the breakfast, selling tickets, and helping Rotary promote the event. In the 34 years of hosting the event, well over $100,000 was raised and given back to the community. We gave away 39 great raffle prizes, mostly contributed by the Rotarians and local businesses.

Again we thank all in the community who supported our event. We served over 800 hungry people this year. We couldn't have done this without the help of our 39 Rotary members, their spouses and children. Also, much thanks goes to these community organizations (over 90 in all): Spring Ford baseball, Spring-Ford H.S. Interact Club and the Spring City Pool organization. The amount of help we had made things go so much faster. Moving, setup and cleanup went at a record pace.

Thanks much to the Interact Club for their cleanup efforts. Here is a summary of the event: Served 805 -Paying customers - close to a record crowd. 91 Helpers worked the event. We served 1600 links of delicious Hatfield sausage, over 700 glasses of Orange juice 100 apple juice and tomato juice. Tom Droege singlehandedly flipped about 2000 Pancakes. We scrambled about 1800 eggs, brewed and served about 900 cups of coffee, 700 slices toast served. Also, we served nearly 300 slices of world-famous shoo-fly pie baked by the Royersford First United Church of Christ.

4 Way Test Speech Competition

Posted by Damian Petaccio on Mar 06, 2012

Image

On Wednesday, March 8th, there was a speech competition held at the weekly SF Rotary Club meeting.  The participants gave a 5-7 minute speech on what the "4 Way Test" mean to them, and how it could be applied in their lives.  They were members of the Interact Club at SFHS.  More than 60 years ago, in the midst of the Great Depression, a U.S. Rotarian devised a simple, four-part ethical guideline that helped him rescue a beleaguered business. The statement and the principles it embodied also helped many others find their own ethical compass. Soon embraced and popularized by Rotary International, The Four-Way Test today stands as one of the organization’s hallmarks. It may very well be one of the most famous statements of our century.  Herbert J. Taylor, author of the Test, was a mover, a doer, a consummate salesman and a leader of men. He was a man of action, faith and high moral principle.
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to All Concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and Better Friendships?
4. Will it Be BENEFICIAL to All Concerned?

The students all did a remarkable job, and the club members enjoyed their speeches.  Pictured from left to right are:  Jaclyn Ritter: Interact Advisor,  William Landis: grade 11, Andrew Alban: grade 9, 2nd place winner ($50), Rachel Schwarz: grade 11, 1st place winner ($100), Haley Krouse: grade 11, Kirsten Whitt: grade 10, 3rd place winner ($25), Julie Quinby: Interact Advisor, Photo credit: Michael Alban, father of Andrew.

The coats were donated by a Car Dealer Association to Spring Valley YMCA to us. Thanks Ann Nelson for getting the coats to us in the first place. Thanks to Beth and Tom Smith for finding yet another need that our club could help with! The bank manager was very thankful.

Over the last few years we have raised money for this challenge through the sale of duck race tickets. The proceeds from the challenge were matched by the Gates Foundation. The funds will be used toward Rotary's battle against Polio. We are almost there (a world without Polio). Only through continued hard work and dedication to this cause can we ever achieve this goal. We should celebrate this achievement in our club an remember the battle isn't over

The Spring-Ford Area Rotary Club and Spring-Ford High School Interact Club hosted carnival games for kids and our very popular Dunk Tank even in the cold 60 degree weather. Thank you to the 55 students from the Spring-Ford Interact Club and 15 Spring-Ford Area Rotary members and their family members that helped to make this event a success. Thank you to our 6 Dunkies from the Spring –Ford School District, who braved the cool weather and had some fun in our dunk tank. Thank you to Steve from Pure Fun Entertainment for use of his moon bounce and four carnival games. Thank you to Limerick Township Park and Recreation for securing a free tent for us to use and three kid’s games a well. Rotary District Newsletter- September 2011
Governor Bill’s Thoughts….
Another month and another fantastic time meeting our fellow Rotarians! From Pottstown to Spring Township Centennial, Karen and I have been welcomed with wonderful energy and PRIDE! Great examples are the Warminster Club’s Safety Town – the grand opening in September - the “Top of the Rock” collaborative networking event and the 20 acre baseball/softball complex of the Central Perkiomen Club. It appears “Rotary Pride – Catch It!” is well underway.
Just a few reminders – September 17th – Rotary Leadership Institute is a MUST for all our new Rotarians. Please encourage a club car pool. By the way, new member mentors might want to Show the Way and accompany their charges. On October 1st the Rotary Foundation Seminar will happen in Valley Forge. If you go to RLI you will know the way. If your club plans to apply for a District Simplified Grant someone needs to attend, just $30 for the first club member and $15 for each subsequent member. Let’s get at least two from each of our clubs. New things are a-happening in the Foundation!
It is time now to get started with our Interact and Four-Way speech contest programs in our High Schools. From my perspective we can make no more significant impact on our community than influencing our community’s teenagers to understand our Rotary Four Way Test.
Have a GREAT month – DG Bill

On Wednesday night, July 14th we had our changeover dinner.  Dave started the meeting at the Spring-Ford Country Club by listing some of the accomplishments throughout the year of our club.  You could tell how proud he was, but also relieved to be done.  Tom Spann then talked about how excited he was to lead our club.  He has a couple new initiatives that he is excited to start.   Dave Hunsberger stepped down from treasurer. Glenn Holcombe stepped down as secretary. They both gave many years of service. Our club is lucky to have had their leadership over the years. Bill Breslawski is taking over as treasurer and Damian Petaccio is taking over as secretary. Connie Lawson and Phil White have joined our board and are looking forward to "going theough the chairs".

Posted by Damian Petaccio on Jun 28, 2011
PierreWednesday, June 29th was Pierre's last day in the "States". Presdent Dave Schreiber presented Pierre with our club banner. Pierre had to leave our meeting early to get to the airport. I think he had a great year. I know we certainly did. He gave a big wave as he walked out.... and had to wipe his eyes a few times during the meeting. It must be hard to develop all of the relationships, and then just walk out. It is always great to see how the student was when they came, and how different they are when they leave. April Heiser did an awesome job taking care of all of the details for Pierre and his host families. THANKS APRIL! We will be hosting another student next year. As always, we need a host family or two. Would you be willing? These students are always the "best of the best". Visiting Rotary at the Canfield Fair, Ohio

Over the Labor Day weekend, I took my family to Ohio for a family reunion.  The reunion was held at the Canfield Fair, Ohio, which is the largest county fair in Ohio.  The place was enormous, spread out over 350 acres, with 1000+ vendors.  While I was there, I thought, "I wonder if Rotary is present?"  Sure enough, I googled the query on my phone, and was able to find the Canfield Rotary in attendance.

I had the pleasure of speaking with fellow Rotarian Craig Olson, who gave us some ideas of some community events they do in the Canfield, Ohio area.  They run a "Holiday Flag Display" service that has grown to over 375 homeowners and business owners.  Feel free to visit their Rotary web page to learn more.

Do you have a story about visiting a Rotary club around the world? If so, please let us know, as we would like to post stories and pictures!

Rotary Club presents $5,211 check

Last week, founders Jeff and Linda Lohr attended a luncheon where the Spring-Ford Rotary presented the $5,211 grant check to Moringa Community.

Pictured from left to right are:
Jeffry Lohr, Linda Lohr, Janet Neff (Spring-Ford Rotary), Mike McCarthy (Rotary District 7430 Governor), and Damien Petaccio (Spring-Ford Rotary President). Not pictured, because he is the photographer, is Glenn Holcomb, who facilitated introductions of the project to various Rotary Clubs that supported the grant.

The ceremony was held at the Vo-Tech School in Limerick, PA, less than a mile from where the Moringa Community project was conceived. Moreover, the function of the Vo-Tech School is harmonious with the founding purpose of Moringa Community - to build strong and effective lives through education in the trades and escape hunger through their own industry and hard work.
Many thanks to the Rotary Club for their belief in our project!

Interact, Rotary celebrate year of service
