THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE … and PP Betsy Jansen have another service opportunity lined up for Smoky Hill Rotary Club. On Tuesday, March 12 we will prepare and serve dinner for the residents at the RMH. Volunteers need to promptly arrive at 4:15PM because that is "crunch time" - a lot of food has to be prepared, cooked and ready to serve at 6PM. In Betsy's absence, President Talee passed out an "unofficial" sign up sheet and said about four more volunteers are needed. Contact Betsy if you have any questions.
THE BEIUS ROMANIA PROJECT IS BEING FUNDED!! … International Service Chair PP Bev Edwards announced the great news: the entire global grant of $117,000 for the Beius medical equipment project is being deposited into our bank account! A contingent of Smoky Hill Rotarians are planning to travel to Romania at the end of May or early June … so far Bev, Myles Edwards, President Talee Crowe, PE Hugh Radke, PP Betsy Jansen and PP Dave Maxwell have expressed interest in making the trip. Contact Bev if you are interested in traveling to Romania for this exciting international flagship project!
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY is wrapping up a 65 townhome project in Sheridan. PP Al Horton is looking for a firm date for a team of Smoky Hill Rotarians to work and will keep us posted. Early May is a possibility. No prior Habitat for Humanity or construction experience is required!
ROTARY DISTRICT 5450 DISTRICT CONFERENCE … Saturday, April 27th at the Arvada Events Center. Register at Rotary5450.org - registration closes midnight April 19. Full Conference fee is $125 per person (9:00 am - 9:00 pm) and there are reduced rates for first time attendees/Rotaract and if you attend the Saturday lunch/program or dinner/program instead of the full day of interactive events. President Talee Crowe would like to see Smoky Hill Rotary highlight the club's fantastic $117,000 Beius Romania hospital project in the Hall of Service. The club has not had a display at a district conference in a number of years.
SMOKY HILL ROTARVARIETY OF NEWS…
PE Hugh Radke attended the PETS (President Elect Training Seminar) last weekend from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon! First and foremost, "We are a heck of a club" according to Hugh. Other attendees were quite impressed with Smoky Hill Rotary's achievements particularly our effort to grow $6,800 into $117,000 for the Beius Romania project! The RI President for 2019-2020 is Mark Maloney. Mark wants to grow Rotary in memberships and projects and give Rotary more exposure through publicity, etc. "The clubs are where Rotary happens" says Maloney, an attorney. He aims to support and strengthen clubs at the community level, preserve Rotary's culture as a service-oriented membership organization, and test new regional approaches for growth. Hugh said the PETS seminar emphasized getting Rotarians to check out ClubRunner. An official Rotary International Licensee, ClubRunner serves thousands of Rotary clubs and districts like ours with one goal in mind - to make technology work for anyone, anywhere while enabling Rotarians to streamline club processes and improve productivity. Go to the Smoky Hill website or at portal.clubrunner.ca/6789. Hugh emphasized "This is OUR club" and provided index cards for each Rotarian to take home and write down three words … "Continue", "Stop" and "Start". After giving it some thought, write down your responses to those words (i.e. what you want OUR club to continue, to stop and to start. Next week Hugh will start individually contacting each member to discuss the responses.
Prez Talee and spent an entire day last week with daughter Emily toiling through the Rotary International website working on the club's Presidential Citation award. The website made it very difficult to accomplish but Talee believes we should be receiving the award this year at the District Conference! Thanks to Talee and Emily for working on the award - was work on the RI website difficult because Emily's house was full of grandkids?!
The NAYEN (North American Youth Exchange Network) 2019 Annual Conference is being held from March 14th to 16th at the Westin Hotel in Westminster. They need volunteers for the conference. If you are interested in helping out, go to District 5450's website and look for NAYEN under upcoming District events.
President Talee thanked John Palmer for temping as meeting secretary this week and PP Bev Edwards for temping as board meeting secretary last week!
Registration for this summer's RYLA and Young RYLA began on February 15. Young RYLA is for students entering the 8th grade and RYLA is for students entering their Sophomore through Senior years of high school. Contact PP Craig Essex if you have any candidates or for more information.
WHAT'S IN THE … TWO (2) BAGS?!!… Sergeant-at-Arms PP Jim Suss decided it might be more impressive to bring two real bags for the lottery in addition to the two bags under his eyes. PP Nancy Jones was pleased to receive something sweet from the first bag and PP Jeff Kaes was pleased to receive something savory from the second bag! Great job Jim! And thanks for reminder: March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month so get off your butts and get screened! Invocator PP Denny Passantino beat Jim to the punch on the four-way test but Jim wisely reminds everyone to use the four-way test in both our business and personal relationships! Denny gave an early version of the 4-way test from a club called the Leather Apron Club formed in 1727 by Ben Franklin which required each member to stand, lay a hand on their chest and properly answer 4 questions: 1) Do you have disrespect for any current members? 2) Do you love mankind in general regardless of religion or profession? 3) Do you love and pursue truth for it's own sake and 4) Do you feel people should ever be punished because of their opinions or mode of worship? Thanks for the history lesson Denny! But this wasn't the earliest version of the 4-way test. "Is it the Truth" and ringing of the Rotary bell go way back to Cleopatra ca 45 B.C.: 1) You got to get your possum, Ain't it the truth? 2) While you still in blossom, Ain't it the truth? 3) Cleopatra and Delilah had it way over Ruth, Mmm, them gels did mighty swell, They sure did ring that bell! 4) Ain't it the gospel truth? This week's speaker was a no-show so President Talee Crowe stepped up using her District membership experience with a question and answer session. Talee asked 23 questions and asked each Rotarian to write down their response. Answers could not be anyone who is a member of Rotary. The questions: 1. Who is your neighbor on your left? 2. Who is the neighbor on your right? 3. Who is the neighbor across the street? 4. Who is your insurance agent/professional? 5. Who is your physician? 6. Who is your dentist? 7. Who is your veterinarian? 8. Who is your accountant? 9. Who is your attorney? 10. Who is your minister? 11. Who is one member of your church board? 12. Who is one member of another organization you belong to? 13. Who do you play a sport with? 14. Who do you play cards with? 15. Who is a member of your wine group? 16. Who is your dry cleaner? 17. Who is your pharmacist? 18. Who is your librarian? 19. Who owns a business you frequent? 20. Who is a member of you HOA board? 21. Who is your printer? 22. Who do you know who works from home? 23. Who is a former member of SHRC that you still see regularly?
Talee then asked everyone to circle the names of everyone on the list who would be a good candidate to visit our club. Talee finished by asking everyone who can share the joy of participating in Rotary by committing to bring one guest to a meeting before the end of June to raise their hands. Several hands were raised.
